It’s a widespread belief that there’s intense friction between the cast members on HBO’s “Succession.”
Particularly, feud rumors have plagued actors Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong, who play Logan and Kendall Roy, respectively. While the seasoned actors may portray complex rivals on the HBO drama, how accurate is their alleged “beef” in real life? Let’s investigate.
In an interview with Variety, Brian Cox dismissed Jeremy Strong’s Strasburg acting methods as “f*cking annoying.” Strong, who is notorious for his extremist method acting approach, has been criticized in the media for his intense artistic techniques. Cox hopped on that bandwagon and guzzled the hateorade by openly criticizing his on-screen son’s artistic approach. “It’s not good for the ensemble,” Cox told the magazine of Strong’s method acting. “It creates hostility.”
Jeremy Strong Seemingly Responded To Brian Cox’s Criticism
Eventually, Strong responded to the criticism, seemingly calling out his on-screen father for ruthlessly criticizing his techniques.
“Lately, people have felt a need to take shots at me or say disparaging things, which I don’t really think there’s any need for,” Jeremy Strong revealed per People Magazine. “The way I approach things, my process. I feel we’re storytellers. I think about those performances I just mentioned. Those are actors telling story through character, which to me is the highest bar. That’s the holy grail for me, creating a character, which is sort of creating an instrument that’s never existed before… That’s the kind of acting that I love. And it does require a kind of, I don’t know, devil may care attitude towards what anybody might think of what you’re doing.”
Brian Cox Expressed His Deep Respect For Jeremy Strong On Multiple Occasions
Is Brian Cox the biggest fan of his co-star Jeremy Strong’s unconventional acting methods? Most definitely not. But does he admire his on-screen son’s performance in HBO’s succession? You bet. On several different occasions, the Scottish native has vocalized his deep respect for Strong’s performance, calling it “tremendous” and “epic.”
“The thing about Jeremy’s approach is it works in terms of what comes out the other end,” revealed Cox. He continued, saying his critique on Strong’s acting approach has more to do with concern about his mental health, than anything vicious. “My problem-and, it’s not a problem, I don’t have a problem with Jeremy because he’s delightful… He’s an extraordinary dad. He’s a pretty unique individual. But, he does get obsessed with the work. And I worry about what it does to him, because if you can’t separate yourself-because you’re dealing with all of this material every day. You can’t live in it. Eventually, you get worn out.”
Furthermore, when Cox was asked to choose an actor from the Succession cast that he enjoyed working with the most, he chose Strong. “Jeremy and I have a lot of these amazing scenes, and our scenes always seem to be the high point of each series,” Cox said without an ounce of hesitation while speaking to IMDB.
While the two may not always see eye to eye when it comes to their artistic approach, it’s clear they still care about each other and admire one another’s work.
