Director Josh Cooley has confirmed there are no current plans for a Transformers One sequel, ending fan hopes for a follow-up to the 2024 animated origin story.
Speaking at BotCon, the annual Transformers convention, Cooley revealed that Paramount Animation is not pursuing another installment.
“I wish I had something to announce, but I do not,” said Cooley during a panel. “What I’ve been told is that Paramount Animation is not interested in making a sequel. That’s what I was told. I wish we could. I have ideas, too. So it would have been cool. We’ll see what happens. You never know.”
Released in September 2024, Transformers One tells the early story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, voiced by Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry, back when they were allies on Cybertron. The movie explores their split and the events that led to the war that defines the franchise. It also featured voice talents like Scarlett Johansson and Jon Hamm.
Despite good reviews, the movie struggled financially. It pulled in just $129.4 million at the global box office against a production budget of around $75 million. That made it one of the weakest performers in the Transformers franchise, which has typically been a major box office draw.
Before the release, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura had hinted at the possibility of a trilogy. In an interview with Collider, he said, “The truth of the matter is you never get to the second movie unless everybody shows up at the box office. We both said to ourselves, ‘This is way too hard to make one good movie to start thinking a lot about the second movie.’”
Both Cooley and di Bonaventura admitted that they had ideas for future films but were waiting to see how the first one performed before locking anything in. Cooley said, “Towards the last year of a film I can’t help but go like, ‘Well, how would this naturally progress?’”
Di Bonaventura added that certain plot threads were intentionally left open. “There were ideas that we were like, ‘Well, that can’t fit in here. Let’s hold onto that. Let’s not forget that idea.’”
Unfortunately, the underwhelming box office return seems to have made that decision for them. While nothing is impossible in Hollywood, and the Transformers One sequel isn’t completely ruled out, the current stance from Paramount Animation is clear: they’re not moving forward.
It’s a letdown for fans who appreciated the deeper dive into Optimus and Megatron’s origins. But as Cooley said, “You never know.” For now, though, the story of Cybertron’s greatest rivalry will remain unfinished.
Fans can still hope that success on streaming or home release might revive interest, but as it stands, the future of Transformers One ends with just one movie.
