Looks like Drake’s legal fight just took a brutal counterpunch. Universal Music Group has filed a scathing motion to dismiss his lawsuit, accusing him of using the legal system to cover up an embarrassing rap battle loss to Kendrick Lamar.
Drake sued UMG, saying they deliberately spotlighted Lamar’s track “Not Like Us”, which he says contains defamatory statements. But UMG isn’t having it.
UMG: “Drake Started This and Lost, Now He’s Playing Victim”

In the legal filing, UMG didn’t hold back, essentially telling Drake to take his L and move on.
- “Drake lost a rap battle that he provoked,” the filing reads.
- Instead of taking the loss like the carefree rap artist he often professes to be, he sued his own record label in an ill-conceived effort to salve his wounds.
“This complaint is utterly without merit and should be dismissed with prejudice.”
Put differently, UMG contends that Drake is attempting to use the courts to undo a rap feud gone wrong, and they want no part of it.
Drake’s Case: A PR Move or a Legitimate Legal Fight?

Drake’s lawsuit contends UMG improperly pushed Lamar’s “Not Like Us” and, in turn, proliferated false and damaging claims against him. But defamation experts say proving defamation in a diss track is an uphill battle.
Shock value, lyrical shots, and unfiltered trash talking are the reasons rap feuds exist. If every artist sued over insults, hip-hop history would be one long courtroom drama.
The message from UMG is clear: Drake can’t sue his way out of a rap beef gone bad.
So, What’s Next?
It’s up to the court whether Drake’s lawsuit gets tossed out or goes to the next stage, but in the court of public opinion, UMG just dropped a diss track of its own.
Will Drake double down or quietly back off? In any case, this hip-hop legal battle is far from over. Stay tuned.
Update: Drake’s lead attorney, Michael Gottlieb has released a statement.
“UMG wants to pretend this case is about a rap battle in order to distract its shareholders, artists and the public from the simple truth: a greedy company is finally being held responsible for profiting from dangerous misinformation that has already resulted in multiple acts of violence. This motion is a desperate ploy by UMG to avoid accountability, but we have every confidence this case will go forward and continue to reveal UMG’s long history of endangering and abusing its artists.”
