Vince Vaughn Teases “Pretty Good” Idea for Dodgeball Sequel

Vince Vaughn just gave fans a glimmer of hope when it comes to a sequel to Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.

The 55-year-old actor, who played Peter LaFleur in the original 2004 cult comedy, said there’s a “pretty good” idea floating around for a follow-up, but nothing is locked in yet.

In a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Vaughn was candid about the project’s status. “There’s always talk of these. Dodgeball, actually, there’s an idea that’s pretty good, but nothing for sure,” he said. While the sequel has been rumored for years, and was officially announced in 2023, progress has been slow.

Vaughn’s current focus is on his upcoming Netflix film Nonnas, followed by season two of Bad Monkey, a series he’s clearly excited about. Beyond that, he teased “another thing” he’s working on but didn’t get into specifics. “It’s always about if the story’s right, if the extension is something that makes sense,” he said. “But I’m definitely open to it.”

The original Dodgeball was a hit with audiences for its ridiculous humor and underdog charm. It followed a team of lovable losers from Average Joe’s Gym as they entered a Las Vegas dodgeball tournament to save their gym from a corporate giant. The movie starred Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Justin Long, and Alan Tudyk, and it has remained a comedy favorite ever since.

Tudyk, who played the pirate-obsessed Steve Cowan, recently revealed that a script for Dodgeball 2 does exist. “It’s written, Vince likes it, I guess that’s all I know,” he said in an interview with ComicBook.com. Still, he admitted the project may be facing some behind-the-scenes roadblocks. “There has to be something holding it back,” he speculated.

Age might be part of the concern. Tudyk joked about being 54 and unsure how his shoulder, injured during the original shoot, would hold up in a sequel.

The biggest hurdle might actually be getting Ben Stiller fully on board. According to co-star Justin Long, Stiller is cautious about messing with something so beloved. “He’s a little trepidatious about doing a sequel to something so beloved,” Long said. “It’s very risky. You don’t wanna ruin the original.”

Vaughn agrees. He told THR back in 2022 that everyone involved wants to make sure the movie would actually be funny, not just a cash-in. “If it feels right and it’s funny, it would be something to go back to. If it’s not, it’s just another idea getting kicked around,” he said.

So where does that leave the Dodgeball sequel? It sounds like it’s still on the table, with a decent idea in place, but fans shouldn’t hold their breath just yet. As with any legacy comedy, the right story and timing are everything. Until then, we’ll just have to dodge, duck, dip, dive, and… wait.
