Weed, Divorce & Zero Regrets: Kacey Musgraves Gets Blunt

Kacey Musgraves is setting the record straight on whether she’s actually done with weed. The Deeper Well singer stirred up headlines last year after saying marijuana was “not for this chapter” of her life, leading many to think she’d completely quit smoking.

But in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she made it clear that’s not exactly the case.

“Um, I never said I don’t ever partake,” Kacey clarified. “I just don’t wake up and hit a gravity bong the size of my face anymore, which is what I did for a long time.” So, no, she’s not puffing like she used to, but she’s not sworn off weed entirely either. “More power to whatever suits you,” she added, keeping it casual and open-ended like she always does.

Fans of Kacey Musgraves will remember her embracing that free-spirited vibe all the way back in 2013 when she dropped Follow Your Arrow. The song, with lines like “roll up a joint, or don’t,” stirred major controversy in the country music scene at the time for its open-minded take on weed and sexuality. “Oh my gosh, it was so controversial,” she recalled. “I was told not to [release the song] and all these reasons why.” Even though country radio banned it and it tanked commercially, Kacey says she wouldn’t trade the love and connections the song brought her for anything.

“I’m not going to present a watered-down version of myself to be accepted,” she said. “I’ll f****** shovel s*** for a living at a horse barn, and I’ll be really happy.” If that doesn’t scream authentic Kacey energy, what does?

Last year, in an interview with The Cut, she joked about leaving her “stoner persona” behind. “It’s not for this chapter. Maybe later, when I’m a 60-year-old lady with nothing to do and I’m just doing pottery all day, maybe. We’ll see,” she said, showing she hasn’t closed the door completely on weed, just stepped back a bit.

She also opened up about love, heartbreak, and vulnerability. Reflecting on her 2020 divorce from Ruston Kelly and her later relationship with Cole Shafer, Kacey said she has no regrets about being all in when she’s in love. “Whenever I’m in a relationship, I’m all f****** in,” she said. “I think that hesitancy breeds hesitancy, and if you go in with something with one foot, it’s going to fail.”

Even after divorce, she still believes in showing up wholeheartedly. “If your heart is feeling open, I think you have to just show up for it. I’m still trying to figure out the balance of that,” she admitted. Honest, vulnerable, and totally herself, just like always.
