Brittany Cartwright co-parenting with Jax Taylor isn’t just awkward – it’s an emotional rollercoaster.
The Vanderpump Rules alum opened up about how difficult it’s been to raise their three-year-old son Cruz together since their messy breakup. The reality TV star, 36, split from Jax in February 2024 after years of battling his substance abuse issues. And now, despite wanting her ex to be in their son’s life, she’s finding it nearly impossible to trust him again.
In a raw interview with People, Brittany got real about the emotional toll this has taken. “He’s done so much damage, and me and Cruz weren’t enough for him to get help for a very long time,” she said. Her voice cracked when talking about the impact on her child. “I want his dad to be in his life, but it’s just really hard when you can’t trust somebody.”
The Brittany Cartwright co-parenting journey isn’t just about making a schedule – it’s about emotional safety. She’s holding out hope that one day Jax will fully recover, but right now, she’s cautious. “It’s going to take me a long time to regain trust in him, and that makes co-parenting extremely hard,” she admitted.
Brittany didn’t sugarcoat what led to the breakup either. She shared that things got so toxic, she had no choice but to remove Cruz from their home. “He was so aggressive and horrible to me, yelling at me in front of our son,” she revealed. “I had to take Cruz out of the house.” Despite all the online hate and accusations that she “knew what she was getting into,” Brittany clapped back. “I was blinded by love,” she said. “Nobody could ever say that I wasn’t madly in love with that man, because I was. But the point is, I left. I’m stronger and happier now.”
The Brittany Cartwright co-parenting journey is now all about boundaries and keeping Cruz safe. She currently has primary custody, and even though Jax has been sober for several months and completed rehab, she’s not letting her guard down. “I’m going to put my foot down,” Brittany said firmly. “I’m going to make sure he’s doing what he needs to do—drug testing, everything.”
Still, she’s not trying to erase Jax from Cruz’s life. “As much as me and Jax are not getting along, I want Cruz to grow up with his dad in his life,” she explained. “So if he can stay consistent, I think that’s very important in co-parenting.”
Brittany knows she’s still healing, but she also wants other women to see her strength. “If I can help one woman get out of a toxic relationship, then I have won,” she said. And honestly? That kind of honesty and vulnerability is exactly what’s been missing from most celeb breakups.
Jax hasn’t spoken much publicly about the split, though he’s hinted at wanting to get back on track. But Brittany’s made it clear that this time, she’s watching actions – not words. It’s going to take more than apologies to make things work.
