Why Ed Sheeran Thinks He’s Not Super Bowl Material

Ed Sheeran’s Super Bowl performance? Don’t hold your breath. The chart-topping Brit recently got super real about why you probably won’t see him lighting up the halftime stage at America’s biggest sporting event.

In a refreshingly honest convo on the ‘Call Her Daddy’ podcast, Ed admitted he just doesn’t think he’s got the “pizzazz” required for such a spectacle.

Now, considering his monster hits like Shape of You, Bad Habits, Perfect, and Thinking Out Loud, you’d think he’s a shoo-in. But Ed’s not buying into the hype. “There was a conversation about 10 years ago to go on with someone,” he revealed, “and I think that’d be the only way that I would do it at the moment.”

He made it clear that while English artists can definitely bring it, he personally doesn’t think his live setup has that Super Bowl vibe. “Here’s ‘The A Team’ and here’s ‘Perfect,’ no one wants to see that,” he joked, brushing off the idea of performing alone. He even questioned it himself with a laugh: “Can you picture me doing it?”

The truth is, Ed’s shows are more loop pedal artistry than bombastic theatrics. And that’s exactly what he thinks doesn’t fit. “Have you seen me play?” he asked. “It’s with a loop pedal and you have to build the things. Doesn’t really lend itself to the Super Bowl. ‘Hey, hang on guys. I’ve just gotta set this up for two minutes.’” Yeah, we get it. Not exactly fireworks and dance routines.

But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be down for a collab. Ed said he could imagine joining someone else’s set – someone like Beyoncé, for instance. “If it was Beyoncé’s show and she had all the bells and whistles, and then there was a moment where we sung ‘Perfect’ together, that makes sense to me.” That kind of low-key emotional moment in the middle of a wild halftime spectacle? Totally Ed.

He even joked about how his laidback performance style could cause some major pacing issues for the high-octane show. “Doesn’t really lend itself to the Super Bowl,” he said. “Hang on guys, I need to set up my loop pedal.” In fairness, he’s not wrong. Super Bowl halftime is all about energy and speed, not waiting for loops to build.

But even the greats miss opportunities. Ed’s former collab invite from Chesney Hawkes never happened either, and that’s a whole saga in itself. Chesney once admitted to turning down a chance to work with Ed back when he was crashing on producer Jake Gosling’s couch. “Jake said, ‘Come and do a session.’ I said: ‘Ed who? I’m working with A1 now,’” Chesney told The Sun. Oof. Talk about a missed shot.

The irony? Ed Sheeran probably has more than enough star power to pull off a Super Bowl halftime show. But in true Sheeran fashion, he’s more interested in authenticity than flashing lights and smoke machines. His decision not to chase that stage proves once again why he’s one of the most grounded pop stars in the game.

So for now, don’t expect to see an Ed Sheeran Super Bowl performance lighting up your screen between touchdowns. Unless someone like Beyoncé calls him up, Ed’s cool sitting that one out. And honestly? That’s the most Ed Sheeran thing ever.

Do you think Ed Sheeran’s being too modest or is he totally right that his vibe doesn’t fit the Super Bowl stage?
