Why Miley Cyrus Refuses Surgery for Her Vocal Polyp

Miley Cyrus just made a surprising confession, she has a very large polyp on her vocal cord, and it’s making singing feel like a marathon with ankle weights.

But here’s the kicker: she’s not getting it removed. Why? Because the raspy, low-pitched voice we all know her for could disappear forever if she does.

In a raw and revealing chat on The Zane Lowe Show on Apple Music 1, the “Flowers” singer opened up about how her unique voice came to be. It’s not just from years of late-night partying or endless touring. Miley explained that she has Reinke’s edema, which is swelling of the vocal cords from fluid buildup. That, mixed with the polyp, has given her the signature texture fans instantly recognize.

“I had Reinke’s edema, which is something that is called, it’s abuse of the vocal cords,” she said. “Being 21 and staying up and drinking and smoking and partying after every show does not help. But also in my case, it does not cause it. So my voice always sounded like this.”

Even though the condition makes performing “extremely difficult,” Miley is not willing to go under the knife. She made it clear she’s terrified of waking up from surgery and sounding like a totally different person. “I have this very large polyp on my vocal cord, which has given me a lot of the tone and the texture that has made me who I am,” she said. “But it’s extremely difficult to perform with because it’s like running a marathon with ankle weights on.”

She admitted that even talking can be exhausting sometimes. “At the end of the day I’ll call my mom, and she’ll go, ‘Oh, you sound like you’re talking through a radio,’” she said. That’s when she knows the vocal strain has really kicked in. “It creates that ultimate vocal fry,” Miley added, laughing.

But don’t mistake her honesty for self-pity. Miley’s not looking for sympathy, just keeping it real. She’s proud of how her voice sets her apart in the music world. “My voice is super unique because of it… I’m not willing to sever it because the chance of waking up from a surgery and not sounding like myself is a probability… So I’m really torn about it,” she confessed.

That wasn’t the only health bombshell she dropped. Miley also opened up about a seriously scary moment during her 2023 New Year’s Eve special with her godmother, Dolly Parton. Apparently, while prepping for Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party, she suffered a ruptured ovarian cyst, and still powered through the show.

“I had a medical emergency. I had an ovarian cyst rupture,” she said. “We didn’t know exactly what was going on, so we did it. It was pretty traumatic because it was extremely excruciating, and I did the show anyway. But it was really, really hard on me.”

This just proves what fans already know, Miley might be wild and unpredictable, but she’s also tough as hell. Whether it’s pushing through intense pain or refusing a surgery that could mess with her identity, she’s not backing down from who she is.

So yeah, Miley Cyrus has a giant polyp chilling on her vocal cords. Yes, it makes performing feel like a nightmare sometimes. But she’s not about to risk losing her edge just to make things easier. Love her or not, you’ve got to respect the fact that she’s keeping her voice and her identity completely her own.
