Will Ferrell is making his Broadway comeback, and this time, he’s bringing Icelandic pop dreams with him.
The 56-year-old comedy star has confirmed he’s turning his cult-favorite 2020 Netflix film, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, into a full-fledged Broadway musical. Ferrell is co-writing the stage version with longtime collaborators Harper Steele and Anthony King.
“We are more than excited to bring Eurovision to Broadway,” Ferrell told Variety. “The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.”
Ferrell originally starred in the film as Lars Erickssong, a passionate (and often clueless) Icelandic musician. Alongside Rachel McAdams’ Sigrit Ericksdottir, the duo captured hearts with original tracks like “Ja Ja Ding Dong,” “Lion of Love,” and the emotional Oscar-nominated anthem “Husavik.”
Now, the big voices, glittery outfits, and charming chaos of Fire Saga will hit the stage. The Broadway musical adaptation is being directed by Alex Timbers, known for smash hits like Moulin Rouge! The Musical and Beetlejuice. Timbers praised the movie’s impact, saying, “When I first saw Eurovision during the pandemic, it buoyed spirits during a very dark time. With this stage adaptation, I can’t wait to bring that same mix of heart, spectacle, irreverence and awe to audiences across the world.”
The music for the stage version will be helmed by Savan Kotecha, a hitmaker whose resume includes working with artists like Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, and One Direction. That means audiences can likely expect powerful hooks, big pop energy, and fresh original songs alongside some fan favorites.
The show is still in early development, with no cast or premiere date officially announced. But it has one big stamp of approval, the real-life Eurovision Song Contest. Martin Green, managing director of the global event, voiced his support: “This is a stellar team for what I am sure will be an equally stellar adaption of a film the world loved. Our aim always is to bring the joy of the Eurovision Song Contest to more people globally.”
For Ferrell, this marks a return to Broadway after his 2009 political comedy You’re Welcome America: A Final Night With George W. Bush. With the backing of Eurovision, a powerhouse creative team, and the momentum of a much-loved film, this new Eurovision Broadway musical is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated stage adaptations in years.
Stay tuned for casting announcements, production dates, and, hopefully, a return of “Ja Ja Ding Dong” in all its glory.
