Fans of Apple TV+’s critically acclaimed sci-fi thriller Severance can breathe a sigh of relief. While an official renewal hasn’t been confirmed by the platform just yet, all signs point to Season 3 being well underway.
Ben Stiller, who serves as director and executive producer, recently reassured fans that they won’t have to wait another three years for the next season. Speaking on the New Heights podcast hosted by Jason and Travis Kelce, Stiller said, “No, the plan is not to [wait three years again]… hopefully we’ll be announcing what the plan is very soon.”
What’s the Current Status?
The Season 2 finale airs today on March 21, 2025, and has already drawn significant anticipation. Titled Cold Harbor, the episode runs a full 76 minutes, the longest in the series so far, and has been rated MA 15+ due to its intense content.
While Apple has yet to officially greenlight Season 3, Stiller previously confirmed in a February 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter that a writers’ room was already in motion. He also hinted to Collider back in November 2024 that they were developing new story arcs and had a clear trajectory for where the show is headed.
Why the Delays?
Season 2 faced multiple production delays due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023, pushing the release nearly three years after the first season premiered in February 2022. Filming for Season 2 reportedly took 186 days, followed by a lengthy post-production period.
Despite the long gap, Severance Season 2 has been met with rave reviews. The Independent called it “one of the best shows on TV,” praising its ability to maintain its eerie, slow-burn suspense while deepening its world-building.
Will Season 3 Happen?
Although not yet announced, all current industry signals suggest that Season 3 is in development:
- Writers’ room in progress (confirmed by Stiller)
- Positive critical reception and strong viewership numbers
- Stiller’s clear statements about the show’s future direction
Stiller emphasized that the team has a long-term plan: “It should go as long as the story goes… that’s something we have an idea of, and we’re working towards as we’re starting up our Season 3 work.”
What to Expect Next
Severance has become one of Apple TV+’s flagship series, praised for its performances (Adam Scott, Britt Lower, John Turturro), world-building, and thematic depth. With Season 2 deepening the mystery behind Lumon Industries and the severance procedure, expectations are sky-high for what’s to come.
For now, fans will have to wait for Apple TV+ to make it official. But if Ben Stiller’s comments are any indication, Season 3 is more of a “when,” not “if.”
