Ryan Coogler Sinners sequel fans, this might sting a little.
The acclaimed director has all but shut down hopes for a second round of his new vampire thriller. In a recent interview with EBONY, Coogler admitted he’s not even thinking about a sequel. That’s right – Sinners was never meant to be the start of a franchise.
Set in 1930s Mississippi and starring Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers Smoke and Stack, Sinners blends period drama with vampire horror, all wrapped in deep cultural themes. It’s unique, stylish, and powerful – but don’t expect more where that came from. When asked about the possibility of a Ryan Coogler Sinners sequel, the 38-year-old director simply said, “I never think about that.” He added, “I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that.”
Coogler made it crystal clear that Sinners was designed to stand on its own. “I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal,” he explained. “Appetizers, starters, entrees, and desserts – I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing.” And that’s exactly what he delivered. The story wraps up in a way that feels final, not like it’s teasing the next installment.
This might disappoint fans who were hyped about the world-building and lore within the film. After all, the blend of supernatural and real-world issues created a universe that felt ripe for more. But for Coogler, Sinners was more than a movie – it was personal. He told The Guardian that the film was inspired by a “personal obsession” with the Great Migration, a time when Black families were considering whether to leave the South en masse. The setting of the film is close to where his ancestors lived, and he wove in themes like slavery, war, poverty, the Ku Klux Klan, spiritualism, and blues music.
Coogler’s late uncle played a huge role in the inspiration too. “We were really close, and he would always listen to blues records – it was his only form of entertainment. I would find myself listening to blues records to remember him,” Coogler shared. That emotional thread is what guided him toward Sinners, and it’s also why a sequel just doesn’t seem like the point.
It’s worth noting that Coogler has spent years directing blockbuster franchises – Black Panther, Creed, and others. Sinners was his chance to create something original, intimate, and not tied to IP. That’s rare in today’s Hollywood, and honestly, kind of refreshing. His commitment to telling a complete story without the pressure of “what’s next” is bold and kind of badass.
So if you were waiting on official word about a Ryan Coogler Sinners sequel, consider this it. He’s not planning one. Of course, never say never – if the movie explodes at the box office or garners award-season buzz, the studio might push for more. But from Coogler’s side, it’s a done deal.
Sometimes, one powerful story is enough. And Sinners is exactly that – a one-and-done tale with heart, horror, and history, wrapped in a stylish, blood-soaked package.
