MultiVersus Shutdown Confirmed – Warner Bros. Makes It Official

MultiVersus is permanently shutting down; here’s all you need to know.

It’s official: MultiVersus, Warner Bros.’ ambitious Smash Bros.-style fighting game, is coming to an end-for good this time.

First, there were several launches, then an extended shutdown, then a relaunch that wasn’t quite right, but MultiVersus will go offline on May 30, 2025. With that in mind, what does this really mean for players, and why is the game closing down? Let’s break it down.

When Is MultiVersus Going Offline?

Warner Bros. Games confirmed that the MultiVersus servers are going to shut down on May 30, 2025, at 9 AM PDT. Once this date has passed, it will no longer be downloadable or playable online.

Will MultiVersus Still Be Playable?

Yes, but it will have major limitations. In particular, even with the shutdown of online servers, players can still play local matches and fight against AI opponents. All online multiplayer features will be lost, however.

Why Is MultiVersus Shutting Down?

There’s no one reason, but the biggest contributors seem to be:

  • Declining Player Interest: Despite the strong start, player interest declined considerably, as reflected both on Steam Charts and Twitch viewership.
  • Imbalances in Game Design: Not everyone has appreciated the changes in the game and its mechanics, which have caused frustration with matchmaking and progression.
  • Revenue Concerns: Warner Bros. Games had already ended real-money transactions, a telltale sign that the game was not performing great financially.

What’s New in Season 5?

Ahead of its shutdown, MultiVersus is launching Season 5 on February 4. The final update will include the following:

  • Aquaman (DC Universe) as a playable character
  • Lola Bunny of Looney Tunes joins the roster.
  • All Season 5 content will be earnable through gameplay

What about the players who purchased content?

Since real-money purchases have already ceased, players can no longer purchase Gleamium, the in-game currency, but all purchases made prior to the shutdown will remain available in the game’s offline mode.

The Rise and Fall of MultiVersus

MultiVersus has had a rollercoaster ride:

  • July 2022: The game launched in open beta, quickly gaining popularity.
  • Mid-2023: Warner Bros. shut down servers to overhaul netcode, matchmaking, and progression.
  • May 2024: Game Relaunched with new content but it did not hold for long.
  • January 2025: Warner Bros. announced the permanent shutdown of the game.

Will MultiVersus Ever Return?

At this point, it doesn’t look likely. Unlike previous shutdowns where WB Games promised to rework the game, this time the announcement does indeed feel quite final. That said, with Warner Bros. holding the rights to all these major franchises, one can never fully rule out a spiritual successor or reboot further down the line.

MultiVersus could have been a long-term competitor to Super Smash Bros, but after an early successful release and with a different character cast, it simply failed to hold on to its active players. With servers closing permanently on May 30th, there are just several months to enjoy it before it disappears from online play.
