After almost two years away, the return of Aquilo with ‘Sober’ last month has seen the track gain over 1 million streams across DSPs and boosted their Spotify listeners to over 1.8 million per month.
Now the Lake District duo accelerates the next stage in a career that has accumulated over 250 million streams by sharing the new track ‘Just Asking’. Both tracks feature on their eagerly anticipated new EP, also titled ‘Sober’, which follows on July 8th via AWAL.
We spoke to the duo about their upcoming EP, and possibly a new album in the works!
T.H.E – Hey guys! Welcome to T.H.E – Music Essentials. What have you guys been up to with this COVID-19 lockdown?
AQUILO – Hey! We’ve both been spending time apart (of course) and trying the long-distance writing thing as an experiment really.
T.H.E – We love how your new single, “Just Asking” sounds. How did it come about?
AQUILO – Ah thanks, can’t quite remember! We wrote it over a year ago with a friend of ours it just kind of poured out in a day. Lyrically it speaks for itself and those songs don’t come around too often (we feel anyway).
T.H.E – It’s from your new EP which drops in June. Any reason why there’s so much gap between the two?
AQUILO – A gap between the song and the EP release? Just because we decided to release a song a month and there are 4 releases.
T.H.E – How long has the EP been in the works, and what can fans expect from it?
AQUILO – The EP has actually been in the works for a while. We actually started a side project in secret in-between our last album and now purely because we needed something else to focus on. After a few epiphanies, we’d released the side project was the new music. Fans can probably expect a little more energy (but not much more!) We’ve grown and changed as people do. The new stuff should hopefully reflect that.
T.H.E – We hear that you are already working on your 3rd album. How different is it going to be from the previous two? Any more information you can share about the album like collaborations, title, etc?
AQUILO – Yes we are! It’ll still be us obviously but our sound has ALWAYS evolved and changed and we’re proud that our fans enjoy coming along through that process. We’d rather not give too much away sorry! Still trying to work it all out ourselves lol
T.H.E – When do you think the album will be out?
AQUILO – It’s hard to tell. We’re just taking it one step at a time. We’ve got this EP to worry about first!
T.H.E – You guys didn’t put anything out for 2 years! That’s quite a long time, were there any issues that caused this to happen?
AQUILO – A few people kind of know the story but in super, super short. We’d been trying to get dropped from the label we were signed to after the first album, they wouldn’t drop us and still wouldn’t drop us after the second. So after a lot of discussions and a side project later, we’d somehow managed to get out of the deal and sign with someone else more fitting to us! No hard feelings though of course, it’s all part of the process.
T.H.E – Lastly, what does the rest of 2020 look like.
AQUILO – It looks really good. We’re feeling optimistic, just getting back into releasing songs again. The response has been pretty amazing so we’re just gonna ride it really.
