DJ KAN-i plays at Hyderabad’s very own music festival – Fields Of Love, tomorrow and we caught up with one of the best Hip-Hop DJ/Producers, to know what he is looking forward to the most.
Here’s what went down!
T.H.E – Hey Kanna! Welcome to T.H.E – Music Essentials. How’s it going and what have you been upto?
DJ KAN-i – Firstly, Thank you so much for interviewing me. I am doing good, busy travelling for my shows, September is super hectic, enjoying it all though.
T.H.E – That’s good. So, tell us, what prompted you to become a DJ? Could you tell us a bit more about how it all began for you?
DJ KAN-i – It’s a long story, I can write volumes on it. But, cutting through all the fat, it all started when I use to sneak out of the home to go check out DJ Ivan perform at Tresure Island back in the year 1998- 99. I loved the way he managed the dance floor and the guests with his music. The year 2000 was my year of transformation, I failed in my 12th exams, I had a whole year in hand, so I decided to learn DJing. It was a ‘now or never’ situation.
T.H.E – How did the name “DJ KAN-I” come by?
DJ KAN-i – My stage name was always been DJ KANn until 2012. But, when I started doing international shows, people couldn’t pronounce my name right. One day, I was in San Fransisco, having lunch and the waitress said – “Can I help you?” and that’s when it struck me – “ Can I – Kan-I”. DJ KAN-i has been derived from my birth name: Kannabhiram.
T.H.E – You’re slated to play at the Fields Of Love Music Festival this month. What are you looking forward to the most?
DJ KAN-i – I have always been part of Fields of Love Music Festival since day one of the first edition and it has been growing from strength to strength at every edition. So glad to be part of Hyderabad’s very own music festival.
T.H.E – How do you go about planning your DJ set?
DJ Kan-i – Most of my sets are like storytelling. So, I am working on something different this year. It is a surprise and you will have to be at Fields of Love to see what’s in store.
T.H.E – How would you describe the hip-hop scene in Hyderabad, and even in India for that matter?
DJ KAN-i – I have been doing this Hip Hop Property called ‘Hip Hop Ryde’ for the past 14 years and it has been a beautiful journey. Everyday, its been growing bigger & better.
T.H.E – You have mentioned in the past that you always try and keep updated with the latest technologies in DJing? Could you tell us how you manage this?
DJ KAN-i – I have always loved technology and I always believe in moving forward with it. In the initial phase of DJing career, I started playing with CDs, then moved to vinyl records, then to DVS technology. Now, it’s evolving faster and concepts like Phase DJ is a new evolution in the DJing industry.
T.H.E – What can we look forward to from you, for the rest of 2019?
DJ KAN-i – 2019 has been good so far, got a couple of international shows lined up with big names from Hip Hop Industry. I am hoping to end 2019 and start 2020 on a great note!
