FLYNN Interview

Flynn is firmly on the rise.

From the soulful balladeering of ‘My Gold’ to the tropical house Lost Frequencies collab ‘Recognise’, Flynn’s blissful voice is winning new converts with every style he embraces. Having amassed 40 million streams and played the likes of Tomorrowland and Parookaville, he now returns with his fresh new solo track ‘One Of Us’.

We spoke to him about the track, its music video and plenty more.

T.H.E – Hey man! Welcome to T.H.E – Music Essentials. What have you been up to with this lockdown situation?

FLYNN – What’s up guys! I have been trying to keep as productive as possible, I’ve started playing my guitar more and I’m writing a lot of apocalyptic songs! I FaceTime my mates a lot too, that’s been keeping me sane!

T.H.E – Tell us a bit about your new single, “One Of Us”. How did it come about?

FLYNN – One of Us is about family, friends and reconnecting with home. It’s about a time when I was living away from home and I kinda lost myself for a bit, I guess I missed that feeling of spending time with people that really knew me, the kind of friends you can pick up where you left off no matter how long it’s been.

T.H.E – How was it working with Toby Scott and Blair MacKichan on the track?

FLYNN – Toby and Blair are geniuses! I love writing songs with them – I’ve been working with them on other tunes that I can’t wait to share after this one.

T.H.E – You have mentioned that when you moved away from your home, you kind of lost yourself for a while. How was that period for you?

FLYNN – Yeah, Life is full of ups and downs, I think it was during that time that I realised how important home and family was to me, you have to try things, I was doing everything to get my music career off the ground and I guess I burnt out – going home when I did re-energised me to keep going.

T.H.E – The music video is also inspired by this insight. How happy are you with the output?

FLYNN – Yeah, I love the video – I really wanted to capture an image of Ireland and show it off in its best light. Where I come from, I’m surrounded by countryside so I wanted to highlight that as well as show you the grittier, more urban side that I have always been drawn to for inspiration. The team I was working with really wanted to capture these places at their best, we filmed early in the morning and late just as the sun was setting, we were so lucky to get the shots we did, Nathan Barlow the video director did an amazing job!

T.H.E You are also a big fan of travelling. Which have been your favourite locations so far, for travelling?

FLYNN – I went to L.A in October just gone, I loved it! Especially the sun! We don’t get that much sun in Ireland, lots of rain, something to do with the Jet Stream – brings us the rain.

T.H.E – What would be the 5 things that you are yet to achieve, which are on your bucket list?

FLYNN –

  1. Release my first album
  2. Play an American show
  3. Do a skydive
  4. learn a new language
  5. Run a marathon
