With some huge early career support from the likes of Solomun, Dixon, Adriatique and Trikk to name a few, Israeli duo Hard To Tell (Roy Leibovitz and Roi Zarhi) have consolidated their status as the pair you want to see behind the decks if you’re going out for a night of a lifetime in Tel Aviv.
Over the past three years they’ve brought that intensity and showmanship to gigs in Ibiza, Berlin, Brazil, Slovakia, Tulum, Italy, Mykonos among others, and their global takeover is assured with a slew of upcoming releases and an album in work.
We caught up with the duo to learn more about how their new record “Arabic Sub” came about, the concept behind their record label, and more.
T.H.E – Hello Hard to Tell! Welcome to The Music Essentials! What’s up?
Hard To Tell – Hey it’s a pleasure to be here with you. We are feeling great, thank you, hope you are too :)
T.H.E – We heard your amazing new record Arabic Sub and we sure do love it! What went behind making this amazing single?
Hard To Tell – Our track “Arabic Sub” we produced together with a close friend – Zohar Ezra, who is an amazing singer in Arabic and we saw uniqueness in its language and accent along with dark and deep electronic music. The inspiration came from the tense situation that existed at the time and we wanted to show that there is no politics in music and everything can be done.
T.H.E – How did you connect with Yotam Avni for the remix?
Hard To Tell – Yotam Avni lives in Tel Aviv like us and we have mutual friends who brought the connection between us. We really like and appreciate Yotam’s music and the connection was natural.
T.H.E – Can you talk to us about the concept behind your record label and why you set it up?
Hard To Tell – We always wanted to release a lot of music of us and music from different artists that we love and when you have your own label you can do it whenever you like so we decided to open our label “Pills On Heels” 3 years ago with our partner Nariz. We can say that a lot of fresh music is coming up in 2022!
T.H.E – Starting at the beginning, can you tell us how you both got into electronic music? Who inspired you to take this career path?
Hard To Tell – We first met 6 years ago, we hung out at similar places in TLV and then we realized we love some kind of electronic music. It was a natural connection. We understand each other’s vision and its clique. We do everything together and each one of us brings its own impact and style to mutual work. We like the same artist and we are attracted to very similar music. We always wanted to have an electronic project together but we didn’t know it’s going to be “Hard To Tell” . We started listening to electronic music back in the 80’s. We just loved to go to underground clubs and raves and stay there from night till the morning . We started to make our own music 5 years ago .
T.H.E – How would you best describe your style of electronic music for those that are unfamiliar?
Hard To Tell – Our music is not based on one specific genre, it is a combination of a wide variety of different cultures and from different worlds in electronic music .
T.H.E – What are some of the key bits of music making gear in your current set up?
Hard To Tell – In our studio we work on Ableton and we use a few synthesizers like the : Moog1, Arturia Mini Brute 2, Sequential PRO 3, And we play a lot of live instruments like drums and more .
T.H.E – What do you like to do in your spare time when you’re not touring the world or making music?
Hard To Tell – In our free time we are a lot with family and friends and of course in the studio
T.H.E – What’s your favourite part of being an artist?
Hard To Tell – We really love to travel a lot and meet new people around the world. The best feeling in the world is to see different people from different Cultures dancing to our music!
T.H.E – And your least favourite?
Hard To Tell – As with any job sometimes you fail to get what you wanted so it can be disappointing
T.H.E – Do you have any more releases or projects planned in the coming months?
Hard To Tell – We will have a few more releases this year and we can’t wait to share them with you soon!
T.H.E – Do you have any plans to come to play in India any time soon?
Hard To Tell – We would love to come to India ! we have never been there yet…
