Ghost production has been a taboo subject in the global electronic music scene for quite some time. Artists who do employ the services of ghost producers refuse to acknowledge it, for fear of being accused of cheating by their fans.

What a lot of people fail to realise is that ghost production isn’t just an opportunity for someone who wants to be an artist and does so by purchasing music that is made by someone else, but it’s also a huge opportunity for producers to earn probably more by selling their tracks as ghost production, compared to actually signing them with labels and the revenue that follows as a consequence.

In order to better understand and analyse this age-old debate, we had a chat with Alex Larichev, the founder of EDM Ghost Productions, on how this particular service is something that is worth being spoken about, and how it’s time to embrace Ghost Production as one of the many opportunities to earn legitimate cash, that the music industry has to offer.

T.H.E – Hey Alex! Welcome to T.H.E – Music Essentials. How has 2018 been for you?

Alex Larichev – Thank you for a warm welcome here! Wow, 2018 was the biggest year in my ghost producers’ career so far. So many collaborations with talented people from around the world. I was very happy to meet a few of them in person during the Amsterdam Dance Event in October. We made a couple of nice songs and produced a few big festival records which are giving goosebumps. Very excited about new things which 2019 will bring us.

T.H.E – You are the founder of a couple of ghost production platforms, for electronic music. Why did you feel the need to start these platforms?

Alex Larichev – Yes, my main portal started as a simple landing page back in 2015. I simply put all my releases as a portfolio and told that if anybody is interested in mixing, mastering, melody production or complete ghost production – feel free to contact me.

The main reason was my job. I’m young and I wanted to make a living from music, rather than working in a local shop. I really felt that if I wouldn’t stop it – then I would forever be doing that and music would just be there as a weekend hobby.

The number of orders was growing very fast and I wasn’t able to handle it myself anymore. So, I started to look for other talented producers who were fine to make records for other people and not being credited. From year to year, the interest to ghost produced tracks started to grow. More DJs, vocalists, bloggers and other media people were looking for good quality royalty-free music.

That’s how the idea of making a shop with ready-to-use tracks came in life. From 2017 till now I run a place where every producer, no matter which country he is from, can upload an exclusive original track and give it away in exchange for a reward. This is great for both sides.

T.H.E – In a nutshell, how would you summarise the kind of services these platforms have to offer?

Alex Larichev – I’d say it’s a great service for artists who make a division of responsibility in every step of their career. We cover their backs when it comes to audio production and deliver them the best products they need on stage.

T.H.E – What are your views on ‘ghost production’ as a whole, and what would you say to artists/fans in general who feel negatively about this concept?

Alex Larichev – Whether you have realized it or not, top industry DJ’s are using co-producers, ghost producers and other engineers to help them in making tracks. This topic is almost not discussed but one of the hottest. Thousands of producers selling their tracks on an everyday basis to help DJ’s get through or update their portfolio.

There are always a lot of things to discuss before going in that business like how you’ll deal with copyrights, royalties, credits, and titles. I think that fans just need to accept the reality of today’s world. Nobody blames pop or hip-hop stars that they don’t produce their music by themselves or if they used a co-producer to finish their ideas. Same should be in a DJ world, that’s my opinion.

T.H.E – For upcoming producers, why should they buy tracks on your platform and not focus on making their own music?

Alex Larichev – If an upcoming DJ or producer wants to make a music for himself – I don’t force him to sell tracks on our platform.

It’s a good idea if you are out of money when you need a new plugin or synthesizer.

Or if you want to practice in another genre and style. It’s a great opportunity to explore the world of music while finding your own signature sound.

Same goes for people who want to make their own tracks, I don’t force them to buy tracks on our platform. Your life – your choice. It’s just good to have both options.

T.H.E – You offer artists the chance to sell their music on your platforms. What kind of sounds do you work with, and what can producers expect?

Alex Larichev – We work with absolutely any dance music that can work well in clubs, festivals, and radio stations. Can be both commercial and underground. We never know what buyers are looking for. Everybody wants to get that unexpected gem. So, try to surprise and you’ll get your reward!

T.H.E – Thanks, Alex! Wish you the very best.

Alex Larichev – Thank you for having me T.H.E Music Essentials, was a pleasure to talk to you!
