We all know Pablo’s paintings but have you heard Florian’s music?
Florian Picasso burst onto the radar of fans and industry members alike with his hit “Origami” last year, which was chosen as track of the year by DJ Mag France. His blend of progressive house infused with energetic, electro-tinged drops is dynamic enough to fit both the club and festival circuit, making Florian a rising star in the EDM scene. Today’s music is always evolving, and Florian is at the forefront of developing a fresh sound for the modern era of the progressive house genre.
We caught up with Florian at ULTRA Singapore 2016 and spoke to him about his upcoming collaboration with Martin Garrix, playing mainstage at ULTRA Singapore 2016 and plenty more. Read our chat below! :)
Akshay – So you’ve had a lot of releases on Nicky Romero’s Protocol Recordings? How is his support actually?? So far???
Florian Picasso – Yeah, it was great, great support, especially with “Origami” because it’s the one which had the most success and opened a lot of doors for me and it all started from there. Then we had “Final Call ” as well, which was a big release too! So yes Protocol made a big change in my career and I am really thankful to them. It’s really cool because we work very close, we always send each other ID’s and feedbacks so I’m very happy to work with Nicky and the whole Protocol team.
Akshay – How did he discover you?
Florian Picasso – Well, I just sent a demo to them maybe over a year ago. Nicky then played it at Ultra 2015 and everyone was like who did this track this is so new, it’s so fresh… So they didn’t reveal the name yet for like maybe 1 month or 1 month and a half and it got really hyped organically.
Akshay – Do you hope to collaborate with him soon?
Florian Picasso – Nothing planned at the moment. We are focusing on some other singles but who knows…
Akshay – We hear you have a collaboration planned with Martin Garrix.
Florian Picasso – Yes.
Akshay – Any information about that?
Florian Picasso – Yeah I am playing it in all my sets, Martin is playing it in all of his sets and it’s working so well. We sent it only to a few friends like The Chainsmokers, Axwell /\ Ingrosso, Afrojack, David Guetta and Zedd who all playing it and now everybody is asking us for it. We came up with the title “Make Up Your Mind” and people are really liking it because there is like a vibe around it. Like make up your mind, make up your story. It’s very deep so people are getting into it, we receive a lot of tweets, and I see like all of Martin’s fan base are going crazy on socials.
The process of the track was great and I sent him a drop id, he loved it, and we went to his studio in Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago and worked on the break which is not finished yet but of course it will be released before the end of the year!
Akshay – How was playing main stage working out for you yesterday?
Florian Picasso – It was fun. The set time was tough because people were coming in but you know I am here I take the opportunity and doesn’t matter 1000 people 100,000, I just go 100 percent. Ultra is always insane and even if there was a small technical issue at the beginning of my set I managed to play all of my new music and had a great time.
Akshay – And what’s next for you? You started touring a lot now, you have a lot of tracks coming out, going forward what is the plan for you? Is there an album we can expect?
Florian Picasso – Yeah. I am working on an EP but it’s going to be really different so you have to put aside the ‘Origami’ style and the bangers I’m doing at the moment. It’s gonna be more like an artist profile stuff you know. I went in the studio with some new people, like songwriters from Los Angeles, musicians… that are usually only working with Madonna, Coldplay and this kind of artists.
Akshay – According to you, which artists have had a phenomenal 2016? Is there someone that has caught your eye?
Florian Picasso – Yes. Jauz and Marshmello. I love what they are doing and just met them, super nice guys!
