Known as a producer that never rests on his laurels, Kaz James continued his meteoric rise with ‘Twisted’ a collaboration with Nick Morgan.
We caught up with Kaz James and spoke to him about this new single, getting inspired by Carl Cox, and his skills in fighting zombies! Catch our chat, below.
T.H.E – Hey Kaz! Congratulations on the release of your new single. What has the response been like?
Kaz James – Hey ya, its been amazing thanks, its funny, as the club reactions when I play it now have gone crazy, I played at an after party the other day and the place went mad, I assume because they know it now.
T.H.E – Not many would know this, but your journey in the electronic music scene was inspired by Carl Cox. How did that happen?
Kaz James – I’ve been inspired by a lot of people over the years, but what you are referencing is an article I read when I was 14 and back in Oz. It was about Carl Cox playing on 3 decks which at the time wasn’t being done. For me it was mind blowing, and was very inspiring for me. The article made me want to push boundaries technically as a DJ and I knew then that if I wanted to play in the big leagues that I would have to be able to play on 3 decks too.
T.H.E – The kind of sounds Carl Cox is known for are quite different from what you produce, or play at gigs. Do we ever see you showing an inclination towards the techno genre?
Kaz James – I mean anything is possible, I love all electronic music genre’s, I come from a very house and disco background, its what I’ve lived and breathed for years, so its not an area musically that I’m consciously inclining too. I know Carl really well and he’s super eclectic, last year at Burning man we both played disco sets at Galactic Jungle, its about the right set at the right time I suppose.
T.H.E – Having had so much experience in the electronic music scene, what are the three things you would like to change about it?
Kaz James – I think it would be great if there was some sort of separation between actual real artists and producers, and ones that buy their way into it, the ones just pay for records, ghost producers etc etc. I find that pretty frustrating, but lets be honest, that’s never going to happen so you have to just accept that it exists and move on.
T.H.E – Which genres within electronic music do you like listening to?
Kaz James – I listen to everything but to be honest I get a lot of inspiration from others genres especially rock and indie records. I love Jack White and the Foo Fighters.
T.H.E – Time for some fun ones, how useful would you be in a zombie apocalypse? What skills do you have that would help you and others survive?
Kaz James – My Zombie fighting skills are a little rusty these days. To be honest I would just drink through it and hope for the best. Maybe at the Winchester lol
T.H.E – What hobby would you get into if time and money weren’t an issue?
Kaz James – I would love to collect red wine. I’m a big wine person.
T.H.E – What fictional place would you most like to go?
Kaz James – The Matrix
T.H.E – What is the most annoying habit that other people have?
Kaz James – Small talk.
