With nearly two decades in the industry, it is an understatement to say that Marcus Knight knows exactly what crowds want to hear.
‘Meridian’ is the profit of hard work and countless hours in the studio, but we want to know exactly how Marcus was able to get the tune sounding so perfect.
We caught up with him to go behind the scenes, and learn about how the maestro makes his music.
T.H.E – So Marcus – can you sum up the inspiration behind the name and why you chose it?
Marcus Knight – Meridian has a few meanings, however in this case I was inspired by the connection to Chinese medicine and acupuncture that is made up of various paths to allow the flow of energy to the human body. The thought of music I’m creating contributing to human energy and excitement is very cool!
T.H.E – It’s a really special track; do you think it’s a sign of things to come in the future for you?
Marcus Knight – Thanks! It’s the first time in many moons I’m making music that makes me musically excited and people into Tech House and Techno seem to enjoy which is fantastic. I definitely want to explore this path and everything it has to offer. I was blown away when Kaskade and Benny Benassi recently played Meridian. It’s great to be validated by peers you have respected for so many years.
T.H.E – Do you have any particular influences you think are noticeable in this track?
Marcus Knight – It’s interesting when people listen to it and bring up various influences they hear but they are never usually the same. I listen to loads of music in different genres so I’m sure there are influences at some level. The important thing is to stay away from Marvin Gaye music…….consequences are expensive!
T.H.E – How long did it take to complete the track from start to finish?
Marcus Knight – On and off it took around a week. It’s important to take time away from it and come back to it fresh to pick up potential improvements to the arrangement in particular.
T.H.E – This is a great way to start the New Year, are you ready to get working on more music for us?
Marcus Knight – I can’t wait to share my next release that I’m currently putting the final touches on and mixing in the next couple of weeks.
T.H.E – Was there a specific moment you knew the track was finished, or was it a slow burner that took a lot of time to perfect?
Marcus Knight – Strangely enough I felt like I had got to 90% really quickly. It’s the last 10% that requires patience and experimenting.
T.H.E – Do you have a method to starting tracks and was this one unique or similar to usual?
Marcus Knight – Meridian was all born from groove rather than melody building. I’m open to either if it makes for a record I can be proud of.
