Strike up a conversation about the current state of EDM and it won’t be long before Nicky Romero gets an emphatic mention. The breakthrough star with the bulletproof work ethic is credited as a driving force behind the fantastic health the scene currently enjoys.

Up next for Nicky Romero is a performance at ‘the world’s largest paint party’ – Life In Color, which makes its return to Victoria Warehouse, Manchester. Check out our interview below where Nicky talks to us about this, the growth of Protocol Recordings in 2016 and plenty more!

Akshay – Hey Nicky! Thanks for taking the time out for this interview. How has 2016 shaped up for you?

Nicky Romero – Pleasure! Great speaking to you. 2016 has been a great year for me. I’ve played some incredible places and managed to return to Asia a few times which has been really special. I’ve also been back in the studio and working on loads of new music and really had a chance to be a bit more experimental, working with some awesome talents from Nile Rodgers to The Script and Colton Avery.

Akshay – Fans would say that you haven’t been as active on the production front this year. And there are rumours that it might be because you are working on your debut album. What can you tell us about that?

Nicky Romero – Haha I think I’ve actually released quite a few singles this year! At the moment I’m not planning on releasing an album, I just want to focus on individual tracks and see how that goes.

Akshay – Are you satisfied with the way Protocol Recordings has grown in this year? What are your plans for the label in 2017?

Nicky Romero – Absolutely! I’m so proud of Protocol Recordings and the team that have helped get it to where it is today. I think we released some great material last year and discovered a lot of new talent. Also happy to have released two amazing compilations (Miami and ADE) and extremely proud to see artists like Blinders and Florian Picasso keep belting out great tunes. I think looking ahead to 2017, it will be even more. Also I’m excited to finally release a track from the talented Raiden in the beginning of the New Year.

Akshay – If you had to select 5 artists who have been exceptional in 2016, which ones would they be?

Nicky Romero – There are many who had an exceptional year, but I chose to go for some of the talent who work with us on Protocol Recordings who have worked very hard this year and made a lot of great things, but also dared to experiment. So, in my opinion that would be Florian Picasso, Blinders, Tom Tyger, Raiden and Maximals.

Akshay – How was it collaborating with Navarra on ‘Crossroads’

Nicky Romero – It was great. One of the reasons that I started Protocol Recordings was to help establish new talent and when we came across Navarra I just knew that I had to get into the studio with them. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some really big names in music but there’s also so much you can learn from new artists, so I love that my position allows me to work with both. I feel very lucky.

Akshay – What are your plans for 2017 from a production and touring point of view?

Nicky Romero – From the production side, to keep making music! We’ve actually just launched the new Protocol Studios complex, so I’m super excited for all the possibilities we have lined up for 2017. As for touring, more of the same and I hope to see you all at my shows!

Akshay – You are also part of the line-up for the world’s largest paint party – Life In Color! How excited are you?

Nicky Romero – LIC is just crazy and the atmosphere from the UK crowd always takes a lot of beating – those guys know how to party! I can’t wait to get back to the Victoria Warehouse in Manchester.

Akshay – What are you looking forward to the most on your visit there?

Nicky Romero – Going to the chippy ;)

Akshay – You have worked with some exceptional artists thus far in your career, is there anyone who you are looking to collaborate with in the near future?

Nicky Romero – I’d love to work with Chris Martin from Coldplay!

Akshay – Thanks a ton Nicky and wish you the very best!

Nicky Romero – Thank you! :)

Nicky Romero plays at Life in Color at the Victoria Warehouse, Manchester UK on Saturday 4 February 2017. For more info visit here.
