London based singer, songwriter and rapper Lu.Ci recently shared her new single ‘I Need You’, out now on all streaming platforms.

Seamlessly fusing slick electronic production, thoughtful lyrics and Lu.Ci’s vocal both singing and rapping, the song explores the feeling of helplessness many people felt during the national lockdown.

We caught up with Lu.Ci, to learn more about how the single “I Need You” came about, her production process and more.

Aditya – Hey Lu.Ci, Welcome to this edition of T.H.E – Interviews! How’s 2021 been for you so far?

Lu.Ci – Thank you for the welcome. Yes the year has been quite fruitful for me and my growth.

Aditya – ‘I need you’ sounds exuberant & quiet at the same time with the music. Could you tell us about the creative process of this track?

Lu.Ci – I wrote the song during lockdown as it was a real surreal experience, life as we know it had been ripped away from us and I wanted to document it artistically. I started writing the lyrics, which naturally started as poetry and turned into a rap. My producer, Steve, Jampact recordings, came up with this amazing, ambient, electro beat and that’s when the magic happened

Aditya – I’d like to know more about the production, it’s soft yet powerful.

Lu.Ci – Steve at Jampact Recordings says “I wanted to create something alternative with a real blend of sounds, something different and ambient.”

Aditya – What’s your message behind the track?

Lu.Ci – I felt lost within this period, everything was different. We were all missing out on so much and had taken so many things for granted. It dawned to me that the whole of the country, the world, were going through this same experience all at once. None of us were truly alone. Even if we had lost a part of ourselves, we were experiencing this together. That’s when I found my inspiration to create this track. The message behind the track is do not take life, love and others for granted. Enjoy every sense of freedom that you obtain and strive for your happiness. We have all lost this simple right once before and we only have one life to make it count so wake up everyday knowing that you can achieve anything you wish, you just need to be prepared to experience it.

Aditya – Can you tell us about your writing process? Do you begin writing songs on piano or do you pen it down?

Lu.Ci – Ah now this will depend on what kind of track I’m writing and what emotions I’m feeling at the time. Most of the time I will find some chords and write whilst playing on the piano. Other times I could be in the shower, driving on the car or be sleeping and will think of a cool melody and some lyrics. I have lots of sleepy voice notes recorded on phone from waking up in the night with a tune in my head!

Aditya – Could you tell us about the direction and production of the music video?

Lu.Ci – I really wanted to create something to artistically represent the feeling of losing a part of yourself and craving social interaction. That’s where the rabbit character came into play. As the situation was surreal it made sense to have a surreal character in there, to represent that part of you that was lost yet still lingering, following you around like a memory. Jack at Bass Films was a great help with this. We worked closely together and decided to shoot the video on Brighton Beach, very early to give that isolation vibe over.

Aditya – Who influenced you to become a singer-songwriter?

Lu.Ci – I think about every artist I have ever listened to. A mixture between Alanis Morrissette, Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac… there was always that creative part of me that wanted to express themselves in a musical fashion. To enable others to feel your emotions through sound is just an amazing thing to do.

Aditya – ‘Lu.Ci’ what does that mean?

Lu.Ci – My family and friends call me ‘Lu’, and the ‘Ci’ part is actually a play on the word “see.” It is how Lu (myself) “see’s” the world. It stands for my vision, expression and journey.

Aditya – Could you tell us the album you stole from your father?

Lu.Ci – The first album I ever listened to, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. We used to listen to this album every holiday with the family on the way to Italy via France. Great melodies and harmonies. I was only small and I took this album from him, listening to it daily. Learnt every line word for word. I actually arranged a trip to the musical for his 60th birthday. Absolutely amazing memories that make me smile just thinking about it.

Aditya – Lastly, what are your plans for the last few weeks of 2021?

Lu.Ci – For the last weeks of 2021, I would like to release another single and finish off my EP. I would also like to lock in some more gigs.
