lunax interview

Lunax’s new song takes us to the rooftops of the world to look up to the sky in moments when we feel lonely and shows us the limitlessness of our possibilities on difficult days. Hidden behind the melancholic lyrics is an energetic sound that motivates and gives self-confidence as well as courage for a change of perspective.

We caught up with her to learn more about how the single came about, working in a male-dominated industry, and more.

Aditya – Hey Lunax, Glad to have you for the interview. How was the last year for you?

Lunax – Thanks for having me here. My last year was incredibly successful despite Corona. I had my first gig at the best time in front of an audience of more than 4000 people in Croatia at Noa Beach Club. That was amazing to reach so many people with my music. A great feeling!

Aditya – I had a chance to listen to your upcoming release ‘Rooftop’, it’s indeed a certified banger! What was the creative process of this track?

Lunax – Wow – I‘m very happy to hear that, thank you! The song is about the feeling of loneliness. We all have times in life that are tough. Sometimes it helps to remember that you are not alone with this feeling. When I’m like this I like to look at the stars and imagine that they symbolize all the hearts of millions of people. That gives me strength in these moments. This is where my inspiration comes from and it’s my motivation to push people with my tracks. I think ‘Rooftop’ has a lot of energy here.

Aditya – Could you share more info on the genre ‘Bounce Slap’?

Lunax – I don’t know if this is a true genre term, but slap house is more like 126-128 BPM and meanwhile already dance-pop. Bounce Slap has much more energy and is about 138-140 BPM, it just makes you want to dance and is very catchy because of the straight beat.

Aditya – In a very male-dominated industry, you’ve established yourself really well. How do you feel about that? What are some of the biggest challenges you faced on your journey?

Lunax – I’m proud that I’ve had such success as a woman and hope that this will motivate more women to work in the male-dominated dance scene. There are many gender-based prejudices that you have to deal with, where people say that you are not able to do anything because you are a woman. Meanwhile, I can ignore that and keep going. The great support of my fans also helps me.

Aditya – At just a mere age of 19, you’ve amassed over 85M streams on Spotify with 1M active monthly listeners. How do you feel about that?

Lunax – To put it in one word: unreal. These are incredible numbers where you’re just completely overwhelmed. Sometimes I imagine to have all the listeners in a studio and playing my tracks. I’m so incredibly proud that I have such great fans. It really touches me and I’m very grateful for that.

Aditya – You got the breakthrough amid the pandemic, could you tell us did that happen?

Lunax – I can’t really answer that. I used the time well and was almost every day in the studio to produce new tracks and played a lot of livestreams to show people my DJ sets. I also have great management with Beat Dealer Records and thanks to them I was able to work with a lot of great artists like MOTi, Marnik and many others.

Aditya – What does your Studio Setup look like?

Lunax – For producing I use the studios of Kontor Records. There you can find everything you need, like MIDI keyboards, a vocal booth, good speakers.

Aditya – Which DAW do you use and why?

Lunax – I don’t think there are any real pros and cons. You have to see how you personally can work best with it. Lately, I’ve been using ‚Logic‘ very often because I think it’s the best to use on my Macbook. Otherwise, I’ve also been using ‚FL Studio‘ a lot. That’s also the DAW I started with and the one I’m most familiar with.

Aditya – Apart from your production skills, you’re a talented DJ as well. What do you have planned for your upcoming gigs? Any shows we should keep an eye out on?

Lunax – Oh! There is a lot planned! Currently, we are just closing the last available weekends in the summer. It goes once through Germany with highlights like the ‚Electricsize Festival‘ and a gig in my home town Hamburg. But there will also be some stuff in Switzerland, like the wonderful ‚Electriczone‘, where I had the chance to play last year.

Aditya – As a DJ, how do you go about preparing for your sets?

Lunax – It depends on which slot I play and who is performing before and after me. But basically, I always try to play a lot of music from myself, as mashups and bootlegs that have not been released and a lot of new tracks that the audience might not know yet.

Aditya – Lastly, an artist you want to collaborate with?

Lunax – Definitely Blasterjaxx and Harris & Ford. Both artists have an incredible influence on me and have a great sound. It would be an honour to work together and learn from them.
