martin garrix interview

Ahead of his two city arena tour by Mirchi in Mumbai and New Delhi, Martin Garrix spills some beans for us.

T.H.E – What can your die-hard fans and new audiences look forward to from the Power Arena Tour?

Martin Garrix – Lots of crazy visuals, pyro, and new music!

T.H.E – What do you think about the state of electronic music in 2018? How important is India as a market to you?

Martin Garrix – I think it’s still doing very well, and it’s also great to see that it’s growing so much in certain countries, like India. I love seeing my fans in India, they are so dedicated!

T.H.E – You recently released a single ‘Dreamer’ wherein you collaborated with a 60-year-old singer MIKE YUNG you discovered at the New York Subway. How did that come about and what has the response been for the song?

Martin Garrix – Working with Mike was so inspiring! He may be 60, but he is still young at heart. The first time I heard him was actually on Instagram, but I knew this could be something really special. So, we contacted him and he loved the idea. I’ve had some great response to the song, people love it. I think his story is a great match with the message of the song which makes it extra special.

T.H.E – You have collaborated with so many artists like Dua Lipa, Usher, Guetta etc. Who is your dream collaboration?

Martin Garrix – I have worked with some great people in the past few years. I would still love to work with Pharrell Williams.

T.H.E – You are the world No. 1 DJ for 3 years in a row. What would you say is your biggest achievement or is the ranking enough?

Martin Garrix – It is definitely a huge compliment, but I don’t see myself as the best DJ in the world. Getting that title, for me, is a confirmation that I have the most amazing fans! I am really proud of where I am today, the things I get to do, the places I get to visit and the people I get to meet. That to me is the greatest achievement. I would not have been where I am today without the great support of my fans.

T.H.E – Do you listen to Bollywood/Indian music? Do you have any plans to collaborate with Indian musicians in the future?

Martin Garrix – I don’t really listen to Bollywood music, but I do think it’s really interesting. The instruments they use. It’s so different! I’m always open to new collaborations!

T.H.E – You travel so much for work — what do you do on the flight? Sleep/ eat/ watch tv etc.?

Martin Garrix – I do a lot of work on the plane and of course sleeping! And I love playing card games.

T.H.E – What have been your top travel discoveries in the last year?

Martin Garrix – Too many to mention! We have visited so many great spots all over the world, like the Perekistolen in Norway.

T.H.E – What’s on your bucket list?

Martin Garrix – A sold-out arena tour.

T.H.E – If you could tell your teenage self-something – what would it be?

Martin Garrix – To continue what I was doing!

T.H.E – What is the best compliment you have ever received?

Martin Garrix – The best compliment is when people go crazy at my shows, it’s the best feeling ever!

T.H.E – What principles would you never compromise?

Martin Garrix – I will never do something if it doesn’t feel right. That can be a collaboration, a song, a performance. If I don’t think it’s right for some reason, I won’t do it! It’s important to stay true to yourself and not let money or fame get in the way of that.

T.H.E – Has anything notable happened to you in 2018? Could you tell us?

Martin Garrix – 2018 was another great year for me. I got to visit some amazing new places, met great people all over the world. We released lots of great music on STMPD RCRDS and we did incredible shows of course!

T.H.E – Which is your favorite city in India?

Martin Garrix – I don’t know if I can pick a favorite. I have seen some amazing places during my visits to India! Mumbai and Delhi have been great! So many beautiful places, so many kind people!

T.H.E – Favorite international collaboration?

Martin Garrix – I’ve had the opportunity to work with so many amazing artists from all over the world, I can’t pick one!
