Myah Sky interview

Charlie Puth’s ‘Attention’ was arguably the biggest track of 2017, and ever since it’s release, artists have been clamouring to make their own versions of the track.

Owing to the popularity of the track, a huge number of covers, remixes and bootlegs have found their way to the internet, and hence, it’s really difficult to stand out.

However, Myah Sky successfully manages to do just that, with her cover of “Attention” that was released as a Smokin’ Jack Hill remix.

Unlike a lot of other versions, this one manages to sound just fresh, whilst retaining the catchy vibe of the original. We spoke to Myah, and spoke about this song, her plans for 2019, and more.

T.H.E – Hey Myah! Welcome to T.H.E – Music Essentials. What have you been up to?

Myah Sky – Hey! Well.. what haven’t I been up to lol! I’ve been extremely busy the past 6 months I successfully created and launched my own brand “Twilight” (a platform for showcasing live talent) in February and of course, I have been working on new material, including the release of “Attention”!

T.H.E – What made you add your twist to Charlie Puth’s ‘Attention’? And how was it working with Smokin’ Jack Hill?

Myah Sky – I remember hearing the song for the first time on a snap chat filter and I just had to Shazam it to listen to it properly. This was when I was introduced to Charlie Puth’s music, he is insane!! I had decided to record some covers to keep my socials active without releasing any of the new material I had made and this was one of them. I had found a lovely acoustic guitar beat which I had recorded over and sent off to my management. One thing lead to another and before you knew it, this remix was in my inbox and I fell in love with the instruments, the vibe, everything!!

T.H.E – Knowing how much of a hit the original turned out to be, how much pressure did you face while adding your twist, knowing that it’s definitely going to be compared to the original?

Myah Sky – I mean.. call it Marmite. You’re either going to love it, or hate it. Either way, I think Smokin’ Jack Hill did a fantastic job and I enjoyed being a part of this dance creation.

T.H.E – Tell us a bit about you decided to become a musician. What were your early interactions with music and which artists inspired you at the time?

Myah Sky – I have always been a little drama queen. Always performing, dancing, singing, acting… THE LOT! My dad was my biggest inspiration with him also being a musician and performer, we used to do musical workshops together when I was younger which really did drive my love for performing. Growing up I would listen to all sorts of music from Celine Dion, Barbara Streisand and Stevie Wonder to Mis-Teeq, B2K and Destiny’s Child. At the age of 14, I had recorded my first ever track and well… there was no stopping me after that!

T.H.E – How best would you define your sound? And do we see you experimenting with other genres, sometime in the future?

Myah Sky – That Festival Sound!!!!! Whether it’s house, garage, dance.. the sky is my limit!! I was trained in musical theatre and was always being told off for trying to be “Mariah” and not singing as a group… I’ve always had a passion for sexy RnB! I’ve been playing around with some material away from the “Festival Sound” experimenting with RnB, Pop & Afrobeats.

T.H.E – Which 5 artists would you want to collaborate with?

Myah Sky –

1. Of course….. Charlie Puth!
2. Lewis Capaldi!!!!!!!! Wow… he is just wow!!!
3. Kehlani
4. Maroon 5
5. Stefflon Don

T.H.E – Lastly, what can you tell us about your plans for 2019?

Myah Sky – I have Vol.2 of ‘Twilight’ taking place on Friday 17th May 2019 22:00 – 03:00. I am holding a variety show; fundraising for mental health charity ‘Mind’ of 8 acts including, dancers, singers (including myself), rappers, spoken word, and a special DJ Guest for the last hour of the event! I have also gathered a whole load of material in the past year with sessions still being undertaken so depending on the outcome of Attention and what material I make between now and then. it’s really wherever the wind takes me!
