Nick Wilson Interview

With over 76 million streams at Spotify and 1 million monthly listeners, British singer-songwriter Nick Wilson pushes his profile up to a new level with the release of his brand new single ‘Safe’ out now via Never Fade Records.

We caught up with Nick to understand what he’s been upto during the lockdown, and how “Safe” came about.

T.H.E – Hey Nick! Welcome to T.H.E – Music Essentials. How have you been keeping yourself productive during the lockdown?

Nick Wilson – Hi! I have been keeping myself busy with a steady stream of Netflix documentaries and working on a lot of new music behind the scenes.

T.H.E – Tell us how your new single, “Safe” came about?

Nick Wilson – I wrote Safe with the production/writing due The Nocturns last year, it was our first session together. We got along super well and immediately clicked in terms of how we all wrote and what we wanted to do, and so we wrote safe in the space of about 4 hours. One of my favourite sessions to date, I think we all knew we had something special.

T.H.E – You wrote the track with The Nocturns, how was the process? What did you enjoy the most about working with them?

Nick Wilson – yeah I love those guys, honestly, my gauge of whether I really love working with people is above just how we get along, and it’s always so so natural with those two. The best songs come from creating an environment where you’re comfortable enough to play around with ideas and accept criticism etc, and with them, it definitely was a case of that.

T.H.E – The track also signals a subtle shift for you, in terms of sound. What influenced this?

Nick Wilson – I think my sound has been evolving ever since I first released music, and it always will be. I’ve been listening to more pop music the past few years and that is definitely finding its way into my own music. I think I’ve also evolved as I’ve worked with different producers and with different sounds that I’ve wanted to use before but never had the means to when I was producing music myself.

T.H.E – With the new sound, which artists do you look up to for inspiration?

Nick Wilson – I definitely take a lot of inspiration from that kind of LA style alt-pop like LANY, Lauv and Lennon Stella, but I’ve always been a huge fan of the more left-field stuff like Bon Iver and more recently Phoebe Bridgers, Ethan Gruska etc. So it’s a kind meeting in the middle for me.

T.H.E – Lastly, what can you tell us about your plans for the rest of 2020?

Nick Wilson – I can’t give too much away right now but I can say that there will be a lot more new music throughout the year. I’m super super excited about it! Hopefully, I’ll be getting back to live shows towards the end of the year, if all of this COVID madness reigns in by then…
