We had a chance to catch up with the power-packed duo on their release of ‘In My Mind’ along with’ ‘Coffee shop’ and the inspiration behind these tracks, followed by plans for 2019. Read our chat below.

Paridhi – Hey guys! Welcome to T.H.E – Music Essentials. How’s it going?

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano – It’s going great. We’re reaching the end of the year and 2018 has been a great year for us. We still have some cool shows planned, like our Sexy By Nature event in Rotterdam and a massive NYE show in Atlantic City, but bring on 2019!

Paridhi – Let’s go back to your marvelous AMF 2018 set, especially the intro. Why did you make ‘Babylonia’ the intro, and what influenced your track selection on that night?

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano – For us this track is something special. The first time we’ve played this track was during Sensation in Amsterdam. Now 10 years later, we got the opportunity to create our own version of it. One of the promoters of AMF heard our version of the track called us and said: this must be the 2018 AMF anthem. 10 years after Sensation we were back at the same place, a very special moment. Playing such a big show was amazing and for our sets, we always get inspired by the crowd.

Paridhi – There is also a lot of love flowing for ‘Coffee Shop’. What went behind creating the ‘Affective EP’ and what was the inspiration for ‘Coffee shop’?

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano – The ‘Affective EP’ is maybe one of our most special projects so far. It merges several different styles and vibes accompanied by a video who brings all the tracks together. The EP moves from deep house to tribal rhythms and it tells a story of a young man who meets the girl of his dreams. We wanted to do something different instead of just releasing separate tracks or an album so that’s why we came up with this idea. The song ‘Coffee Shop’ is inspired by the 24/7 diners in the United States, but with a little bit of irony of the Dutch coffee shops. We’re from Amsterdam and Sunnery lived in New York so that’s where the inspiration came from. It’s currently our most-requested track.

Paridhi – Another amazing track that we heard during AMF and was an absolute stunner is ‘In My Mind’, which is officially out now. How did it come about?

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano – It’s a collaboration with Marc Volt. He’s a very talented Dutch producer we’ve been following for quite some time and we met him a few years ago. He sent us a first version of ‘In My Mind’ and we were both like: this is amazing!!! We worked on the track together and last summer in Ibiza we played it for the first time. The reaction of the crowd was WOW. We knew this was going to be a thing, so we had to finish is as soon as possible and release it. The first time we played the final version was at Tomorrowland and we got so many great reactions from everywhere.

Paridhi – The two of you have always focused on bringing the sexy out in your listeners, be it with your shows or your Sexy by Nature parties. What does sexy mean to you and why is it important to be sexy?

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano – We think sexy is all about attitude and confidence. Everybody can be sexy in their own way. For us it’s more how you present yourself than how you look or dress. Being sexy is being comfortable with who you are and that is why it’s so important to us.

Paridhi – Sexy By Nature began as a radio show and has now become your funky house concept, and the next one is coming soon in Rotterdam. How did this concept come by and what do you see it become, and what has been your larger aim with this concept?

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano – People always told us our sound was sexy and energetic, so we thought: this is something we should focus on. The name Sexy By Nature is something every person is. Every individual can feel sexy and that’s the way we look at it. We’ve already hosted stages at Creamfields and Tomorrowland and we’ve had events in New York, Los Angeles, Ibiza and Amsterdam. Our dream is to bring the concept all over the world and we’re currently working on this. Stay tuned!

Paridhi – SJ & RM also has a very unique/sexy fashion style, be it on stage or while traveling, you always manage to look chic. What kind are clothes are an absolute essential for any individual to have, according to you?

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano – Not really sure if there are essentials that everybody needs. Just dress the way you like and wear what makes you feel best. We like to keep it kind of casuals and wear clothes in which we can move, especially on stage where we are moving and jumping the whole time it’s important to wear something you feel confident and comfortable in.

Paridhi – Before we sign off this interview, we are sure, all your fans want to know what your plans for 2019 are. Could you give us a sneak peek?

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano – There is a lot planned for 2019!! We’ll be touring the world with Sexy By Nature. There will be an event in Cancun on March 7 and we’re looking into the possibilities to bring the concept back to Miami. Besides this we’re playing Tomorrowland Winter and some other really cool shows and festivals. SONO Music wise we’re really excited for all the amazing music we’ve got lined up to release. One thing we can tell is that we have a big collab planned!
