T.H.E Interview – Introducing Flemcy Music

Whilst many labels are founded every year, one in particular is piling up considerable attention in 2015, due to its unique vision and musical agenda.

Established a few months ago, Flemcy Music is starting its journey to propel a highly original blend of Deep, Progressive and Techno flavours. The brainchild of Jean-Pierre Lantieri, Flemcy Music is seeking to become a platform for like-minded producers to flourish and the aim is to put together a family of stellar artists that will represent the Flemcy brand around the globe.

We’ve decided to have a chat with Flemcy Music’s creator and owner Jean-Pierre Lantieri to get to know more about the Flemcy imprint and dig deeper into their plans for the months ahead.

Akshay – Hey Jean-Pierre, thanks for talking to us. How are you and what’s happening in your world at the moment?

Jean-Pierre Lantieri – Fine fine, thanks! Sometimes I wonder why there are only 24 hours in a day but then… So yes, I’m busy producing my own tracks with the goal of creating at least 2 tracks a month (goal achieved this year so far), DJing, preparing my weekly Enigma Show for the radios, going to events and music conferences like the Brighton Music Conference and ADE in Amsterdam and launching my new label Flemcy Music, which is quite time consuming as I want to do it seriously – but quite rewarding too.

Akshay – You’ve just launched your new label Flemcy Music – what’s this imprint all about?

Jean-Pierre Lantieri – That’s my baby – the place where I wish to gather some music that I like and which I know a lot of people will appreciate. I want the music of Flemcy to be yummy and sexy, but not cheesy, more specifically somewhere between melodic Techno, Deep House and classic Progressive. And I want to give the opportunity to some like-minded artists to get more exposure, so that we can build a family.

Akshay – What’s the meaning behind the name Flemcy?

Jean-Pierre Lantieri – Oh, that’s quite personal. It’s the nickname given by my friend to his apartment where I currently reside – a friend who has been welcoming me when I arrived in London last year and I did not know many people here, so thanks Kitson for allowing me to use the name Flemcy!.

Akshay – When and how did the idea of creating this label evolve?

Jean-Pierre Lantieri – The idea has been in my mind for quite some time, but I’ve been a bit shy to implement it in the past years as there are already a lot of good – and not so good – labels out there. But having met many artists who had excellent music but had some difficulties to get it out there, I eventually decided to create this label. Therefore Flemcy Music is a tool that allows me to have some freedom in the music I want to release, be it mine or my fellow artists’.

Akshay – What would you like to achieve through building this label?

Jean-Pierre Lantieri – I’d like my label to become at some point big enough to have its own scene and having myself become a kind of daddy for Flemcy artists. My models are labels like Toolroom, Defected and Suara – maybe I’m a bit ambitious there, but I believe that being a bit ambitious can help me reach higher goals.

Akshay – What are your initial plans for this imprint?

Jean-Pierre Lantieri – My initial plan is to have a set of quality releases from various artists, including a few of my own tracks, all with the same musical sensibility. A longer plan includes setting up a label night, but that will only happen when Flemcy will land enough recognition.

Akshay – Walk us through some of the things you’re currently working on to build up Flemcy Music.

Jean-Pierre Lantieri – Obviously, the first place to build up Flemcy Music is on line, with our site and social media pages (check them out below). Also, we are reaching out to DJs and tastemakers via some reputable DJ pool, promo and P.R. companies, as well as via our own database and we certainly believe in the force created as a group, so I’m looking for more artists to join the Flemcy family.

Akshay – When is your first Flemcy Music release scheduled? Can you give us some more info about it?

Jean-Pierre Lantieri – The first release is called ‘Stellar’ and it will be released on 1st December 2015 – it’s one of my own tracks. There will be 2 versions of it: an original mix and an extended mix. Some DJs loved it enough to play it several weeks in a row on their radio show, I’ve played it a few times in clubs, and I still remember how the clubbers at the legendary Club 414 in London were happy with it. The two following releases will be EPs from some of Flemcy’s artists later in December.

Akshay – Can you tell us more about the first few artists that have joined the Flemcy family?

Jean-Pierre Lantieri – The first artists who joined us are all artists that I’ve met in the past year and who’s music I’ve resonated with. I met Mystik Vybe and smoKINGhouse at the DJ collectives I’m part of here in London, namely Love United and Darkest Before Dawn. I met Andrew Consoli, Ornery and Jay Maguire at Beatcamp or at gatherings organised by Beatcamp. JunoJuno is an artist I’ve met on line when I was living in Malaysia before coming to London. And I’m discussing with a few ones whom I hope will join Flemcy.

Akshay – What’s the musical direction you’d like to take for this imprint?

Jean-Pierre Lantieri – Clearly underground. Well, this word underground is vast and sometimes I don’t understand why it’s called underground as some so-called underground artists are hugely popular. More specifically I want Flemcy Music to be somewhere at the confluence of Techno, Progressive (I mean the classic progressive, not the one that has been used in recent years for EDM-ish music), and Deep. If “Deep-Prog-Tech” was a genre, I would place Flemcy in it.

Akshay – Are you currently accepting any demos?

Jean-Pierre Lantieri – Yes we are. We have not advertised it, but a message to [email protected] is the easiest way to reach us. Needless to say that tracks that are being sent to us, preferably soundcloud links, must meet Flemcy’s musical sensibility. It’s amazing, even irritating, the number of demos and promos that come to me which are not related whatsoever with my kind of music. It’s a big waste of time for everybody, so that’s why I insist: the artists who wish to show us their music must do a little bit of research and make sure that their music would happily sit within the genre of our other tracks.

Akshay – Describe Flemcy Music in a few words.

Jean-Pierre Lantieri – I’d like Flemcy Music to become a hub for artists and connoisseurs around a fusion of Deep, Progressive and Techno sound.

Akshay – Anything you’d like to add?

Jean-Pierre Lantieri – Well, if you see a guy in a club with a glass of wine in his hand (I can’t deny my French origins!) when everybody else is drinking beer, water or Vodka Red Bull, that could well be me checking out new artists!

Akshay – Thanks Jean-Pierre!
