T.H.E Interview – Otm Shank

Following a prolific career as a Bollywood pop singer (under a different alias), Otm Shank is making his comeback. This time in Hollywood.

His debut track, ‘Ravish’, takes inspiration from countless love affairs in a genre Otm is dubbing Bollywood tech-funk, known for its bouncy bass heavy vibe, thumping drums, and off-kilter groove, mixed with magical and mysterious sounds from the orient and beyond.

Hot off the back of its premiere on BBC Radio 6 Music and support from a diverse range of major international club and radio DJs, ‘Ravish’ marks the first release on Otm’s new label imprint Pinkturban, established to spread his message of peace and love throughout the lands.

We got a chance to speak to Otm and learn more about who exactly is ‘Otm Shank’, his upcoming release – Ravish, and his Pinkturban imprint. Check out our chat below.

T.H.E – Hello, Otm Shank. Thanks for taking time out for this interview. What have you been up to lately?

Otm Shank – Thank you for sharing your time with me! Lately I’ve been very, very busy. Who would have thought launching a new artist project and a record label would be so much work?! There’s never enough time in the day (or night). I tried not sleeping for a while but it caught up with me. So now I’m restoring the balance, finding the middle way, and enjoying every moment of it!

T.H.E – For those unfamiliar with your work, this isn’t the first time you’ve explored the creative side of music.

Otm Shank – I’ve been exploring music my whole life, and probably countless ones before that. But Otm represents a brand new journey – a humble learning experience into new cultures, art, and self discovery – and one that I’m very excited about.

T.H.E – You’re also a prolific Bollywood pop singer. Why the change or better yet, why not?

Otm Shank – Life contains many chapters, and often we only understand the reasons for them when looking back. The mind can be unreliable and indecisive, but the heart seldom lies, so I try just to follow my heart and see where it takes me. This time it took me to Hollywood and I have no regrets.

T.H.E – Your newest single “Ravish” is out November 16th. How is this song compared to your other works?

Otm Shank – ‘Ravish’ is a completely new sound, but at the same time draws from all the music that has ever inspired me. It’s the first time I feel I’ve been able to capture a musical version of myself, which has always been my goal. It represents both the light and the dark side of a love story that keeps repeating for me. I’m only beginning to fully understand it now.

I call the genre Bollywood tech-funk. That could translate to bass heavy tech house fused with Indian instrumentation, and a groovy bassline, but I’ll let you decide. I’m just excited to unveil it to the world on November 16th!

T.H.E – Your label, Pinkturban, is releasing the new single, how amazing is that?

Otm Shank – On a scale of 1 to amazing, it’s AMAZING! Having my own label has always been a dream of mine and it is amazing that it’s finally happening. Pinkturban is about building a collective of producers, DJs, and artists, and sharing successes, inspiring people and bringing cultures together. It breaks down barriers, questions society’s obsession with image, and spreads a message of equality. It’s not going to be easy but it will definitely be worth it.

T.H.E – Your latest single “Ravish” has been remixed by heavy hitters like Jey Kermis, Iced Monkey, etc? What is the thinking that goes into selecting artists for a remix package?

Otm Shank – It’s all about the music. I always look for the ‘magic’ in people. You could also call this uniqueness or potential. I believe when you look at the world like that, possibilities open up in ways you never imagined. I also wanted the package to represent the three countries that are the biggest influences to my sound. Jey Kurmis lives in the UK, Iced Monkey lives in India and I now live in the USA.

I knew that both remixers would deliver something very special and I couldn’t be happier with the results. I’m extremely honoured to have had the opportunity to work with such talented artists on my first release. Please make sure to check out their other material:

T.H.E – Any more collaborations, special projects, etc coming up that you would like to share?

Otm Shank – I’m finishing up the next single which explores a more minimal subtle approach. I’m also working on my live show and planning the launch of Pinkturban parties in LA. Oh, and I’ll be fitting some more sleep in there too!

T.H.E – Thank you Otm Shank for taking time out to talk to us here at T.H.E – Music Essentials. It’s a pleasure!

Otm Shank – Thank YOU! I am very grateful for the opportunity to speak with you and share my thoughts and I look forward to catching up with you again in the future.
