T.H.E Interview – Sanjoy

0

A ball of nonstop energy, Sanjoy has been globe-trotting for all 24 of his years, starting off in Bangladesh, and ending up in California, where he honed his musical talents—drums, and keyboards—to the point of mastery.

Sanjoy’s love for performing pushed him to join and play with multiple bands from the age of 13.

A perfectionist from the start, Sanjoy began exclusively producing his own electronic dance music and developing his unique sound.

We caught up with him and spoke to him about his early associations with electronic music, his ‘Completed Me’ single with Aditi Singh Sharma and plenty more! Read our chat here. :)

Auxport – Hi Sanjoy! Thanks for taking the time out for this interview.

Sanjoy – Yo waddup! Thank you for having me :)

Auxport – To give readers a bit of a background into you as an artist, could you tell us who have been your influences and inspirations to start making your own music?

Sanjoy – I started learning Indian classical music at the age of 3 and moved to the U.S. when I was 11 years old. I could never really get into sports and other extracurricular activities. Music was my only escape. I never consciously knew that I was good at making music. I would always write tunes in my head and try to put them together in a song form. I was gifted a laptop for my 13th birthday and that’s when I discovered the DAW Reason. I’ve never stopped making music since then and now we’re here!

Auxport – What attracted you towards electronic music?

Sanjoy – The fact that I could create the sounds I hear in my head without seeking help of another musician.

Auxport – How do you think the scene has evolved after the bigroom boom in 2013?

Sanjoy – “Big Room EDM” term was coined to rebrand dance music into pop variant. It’s amazing that just like Jazz, Rock and Hip-Hop, electronic music is experiencing the same thriving underground industry that’s constantly pushing the boundary and introducing new sounds. I think people are a bit more open minded about dance music now and there is no expectation for a song to be a 128 bpm high-energy banger.

I personally love all forms of dance music, whether it be pop or underground. I play various sub-genres of dance music in my sets because at the end of the day a good song is a good song.

Auxport – Your last progressive record, Completed Me; came out more than a month ago, what has been the response from your listeners? Can you tell us a little more about your collaboration with Aditi Singh Sharma on this track?

Sanjoy – The response has been great! I’ve received countless number of messages about how much people loved the song and the music video. When I play the track out in my shows, even if people don’t know the song, by the time the chorus repeats for the second time everyone sings along! This is exactly the reaction I wanted from people :)

Completed Me required a very powerful and open vocal. Aditi has been doing amazing work in Bollywood and I’ve been a fan of hers for a while. I reached out to her after.

Auxport – You recently attended Miami Music Week, how was the experience for you?

Sanjoy – Miami Music Week was unreal. It was my first time there and I literally met and hungout with all of the DJ’s and producers I’ve looked up to! I was the only Bangladeshi/Indian Artist representing my countries there. I performed at the Power96 pool party and the BMF Music Lounge at the W Hotel. I also networked with some of the most important people in the Dance Music industry. Other than that I did a lot of press, which is also part of this now! It was seriously an amazing experience and I can’t wait to go back next year with a lot more music released.

Auxport – How has 2016 been so far for you? What can we expect for the rest of the year, both in terms of touring and production?

Sanjoy – 2016 has been amazing so far. Just in 3 months I’ve learnt so much about the music industry its crazy! I already released 2 songs and have been connecting with so many new and old fans. I am really looking forward to releasing a lot of new music, about a new song each month! My next big release will be in May and I hope people really enjoy that new Summer Anthem! With so many new records coming out, and the support of all my fans, I’m hoping for an amazing year :)
