Will B Interview: Talking ‘Shy,’ Afro House, and What’s Next

Will B is making waves in the Afro House scene with the release of Shy, his first fully original production of the year. A collaboration with respected producer Kobina Akin, the track fuses melodic depth with rhythmic energy, blending uplifting and darker sonic elements. Featuring vocals from S.O. and a remix by Rudy Julius, Shy highlights Will B’s evolving artistry and solidifies his place in the genre. This Will B Interview delves into his creative process, collaborations, and future plans.

The Inspiration Behind ‘Shy’

Will B’s journey with Shy began when Kobina Akin, the alias of Mick Wilson, approached him with the track’s vocals. “The moment I heard them, I knew I wanted to be part of the project,” Will B shares. “The song had so much potential, and collaborating with Kobina was an easy decision.”

Why S.O. Was the Perfect Fit

S.O.’s vocals take Shy to another level. “The track worked as a dub version, but when S.O. added his vocals, it transformed into something bigger,” Will B explains. “His smooth yet dynamic delivery ensures the song stays engaging throughout.”

Achieving the Perfect Sound Balance

Shy balances uplifting melodies with deeper, darker textures. “The track starts downtempo, but as it builds, new elements inject energy,” Will B says. “A pluck sound in the first quarter lifts the energy, while minor chords ensure the track retains its darker mood.”

Remote Collaboration With Kobina Akin

With Will B in London and Kobina Akin in Ibiza, the duo worked remotely using Zoom and file-sharing platforms. “We exchanged ideas back and forth until we reached the perfect balance,” Will B shares. “Even the AI-generated music video involved multiple revisions to achieve our vision.”

The Significance of ‘Shy’ for Will B

“This is a major milestone for me,” Will B reflects. “While I’ve released sample-based tracks as Wilza and done Afro House edits, Shy is my first completely original work. Seeing it out in the world is an incredible feeling.”

Breaking Down the Production

Will B, a trained classical pianist, places high importance on melody. “Chords are always the foundation of my tracks,” he explains. “Once I settled on the chord progression, everything else fell into place. The Afro House percussion added the essential tribal groove.”

The Creative Chemistry With Kobina Akin

Despite working remotely, their synergy was seamless. “We’ve been friends for years, so our creative process was natural,” Will B states. “With Kobina’s experience and my energy, we crafted something we’re both proud of.”

Structuring ‘Shy’ for Maximum Engagement

The track’s arrangement was carefully designed. “We extended the breakdown in the middle to let listeners fully immerse themselves,” Will B says. “This also gives DJs more control over the energy of their sets.”

Rudy Julius’s Remix – A Darker Take

Rudy Julius delivered a unique interpretation of Shy. “His remix is much darker, yet deeply connected to the Afro House scene,” Will B shares. “He’s a graduate of Bridges for Music School in South Africa and regularly supports Black Coffee and FKA Mash. I hope to collaborate with him again in the future.”

What’s Next for Will B?

Will B has big plans for 2025. “In April, I’m releasing my next single with one of Afro House’s biggest vocalists,” he teases. “Then in June/July, I have a double AA-side single coming, with incredible remixes in the works.”

With Shy, Will B has set a strong foundation for what promises to be a busy year. His seamless blend of melodic and percussive elements has established him as a rising force in Afro House.
