Yves Larock Interview

A revered figure, whose productions are no stranger to firing up a multitude of dance floors & radio airwaves – over the last decade & beyond.

Yves Larock has built up a formidable following & global fan base. Yves has also gone onto cement his place as one of House music’s shining lights, with a string of releases on labels including Defected, Spinnin’, Flamingo, Ministry of Sound & his own imprint Millia Records.

Up next for him sees the release of “Break Down The Walls” which features Jaba (who also collaborated on “Rise Up” with Yves). Read our chat where Yves talks about this single, plans for 2019 and more.

T.H.E – Hey Yves! Welcome to T.H.E – Music Essentials. Congrats on your latest single ‘Break Down The Walls’, how has 2018 been for you overall?

Yves Larock – So this year started calmly. I finally came out of my hibernation after a few years :-) I especially found great motivation in the studio and a lot of creativity, which promises a beautiful 2019 ahead.

T.H.E – Your track ‘Rise Up’ went on to become a big global hit when it was released. Did the success bring more pressure or expectations to live up to? And if so, how did you deal with it?

Yves Larock – This success definitely brings a lot of pressure and a lot of questions about it too. Before “Rise Up” I did not think much in things outside the process of creation. We had success and obviously wanted that to continue, but I did not have another big success — may be because I was over calculating. That’s why this year, I decided to make music like in the beginning — without over thinking, without questioning myself, just allowing the feeling and I have been a lot more creative because of this.

T.H.E – ‘Rise Up’ was made in collaboration with Jaba, who is also featured on your new single ‘Break Down The Walls’. How was it working together on the track & can you tell us a bit about the production process?

Yves Larock – Jaba is a friend, he often comes by my studio just to say hello. I’ve proposed many productions that he did not like & that’s why I like Jaba – he tells me when he does not like the song and he will just not work on it. This time, he liked the instrumental of “Break Down The Walls”, so we just got in the studio together to work on it.

T.H.E – Given that there’s a substantial gap between both collaborations, what made you once again get into the studio with Jaba for the new single?

Yves Larock – As I mentioned during the previous question, Jaba did not like the songs I was offering him.. so I took responsibility for having produced bad music in the last years :-)

T.H.E – Your signature sounds can be categorized as House Music, in its pure form. Do we ever see you experimenting with other genres as well?

Yves Larock – It’s true that I’ve been known as a producer of House music, but the cool thing nowadays is that people are totally open to different styles of music. So now, I do what I like and don’t think about the style. I go to see other horizons, and my future productions will be of various styles with House influence or House remix.

T.H.E – Having traveled across the world touring, which country and its crowd stands out as your favourite, and why?

Yves Larock – It’s very difficult to define a favourite country, because everything is very random. You can do almost the same set 2 times in the same city, 2 nights in a row, and the vibe will be totally different. So I’ve spent fantastic nights and others worse in every country in the world

T.H.E – And finally, what are your plans for 2019 looking like so far?

Yves Larock – I’m going to release about 1 new remix track a month, and also release other more club / underground tracks under my new  alias “ Overcoding.” Cannot wait for you to let me know what you think of what I have coming up for you.
