In a massive deal that’s set to shake up the auto retail landscape, Asbury Automotive Group has officially announced its acquisition of The Herb Chambers Companies for a staggering $1.34 billion.
This acquisition includes 33 dealerships, 52 franchises, and three collision centers across Massachusetts and Rhode Island, generating a whopping $2.9 billion in revenue in 2024.
Herb Chambers Reflects on the Deal
Herb Chambers, the legendary figure behind the dealership empire, isn’t walking away entirely. While he’s selling most of his business, he’s keeping ownership of Mercedes-Benz of Boston in Somerville, Massachusetts. Reflecting on the sale, Chambers stated:
“As I look back on the last 40 years in business, I do so with immense pride, and as I look forward, I will do so with great satisfaction knowing what we built together will be in trusted hands.”
Chambers will also serve as a Special Advisor to Asbury, ensuring a smooth transition for the brand.
What This Means for Asbury Automotive
Asbury Automotive Group, headquartered in Duluth, Georgia, is already one of the largest automotive retail and service companies in the U.S. This acquisition marks a major push into the New England market, an area where Herb Chambers has long dominated.
With this deal, Asbury adds a huge footprint in the Northeast, expanding its portfolio to:
- 152 new vehicle dealerships
- 198 franchises
- Operations covering 31 car brands
How the Deal Is Being Funded
To finance this massive purchase, Asbury plans to use a mix of credit facility capacity, mortgage proceeds, and cash. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2025, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The Impact on Customers and Employees
For customers, the transition should be relatively seamless. Asbury has assured that the customer-first philosophy that Herb Chambers built over decades will remain intact. Employees of Herb Chambers’ dealerships—numbering over 2,200—will also transition under Asbury’s management.
The real question is whether Asbury will maintain the same level of personalized service that made Herb Chambers a household name in the region.
