IRS Launches 2025 Tax Season with New Filing Tools
What’s New for the 2025 Tax Season?
The IRS has made significant strides in modernizing its systems. Here are some of the key updates:
- Direct File Expansion: Available in 25 states, this tool allows taxpayers to file directly with the IRS for free.
- Enhanced IRS Online Account: Taxpayers can access more features, including digital notices, account transcripts, and payment options.
- Voice and Chat Assistance: New virtual assistants and chatbots will guide users through common queries and issues in both English and Spanish.
- Mobile-Friendly Tax Forms: Access and save 67 IRS forms on mobile devices, making filing on the go easier.
- Improved Scam Alerts: A banner on the IRS Online Account homepage warns taxpayers of emerging tax scams.
Direct File: A Game Changer
One of the most notable updates is the expansion of the Direct File program. Initially piloted in 12 states, the program now includes 13 additional states. Taxpayers can use Direct File to handle federal returns and seamlessly navigate to state tools for local filings. It’s web-based, mobile-friendly, and includes features like data imports from W-2s and IRS accounts. This year, Direct File supports more tax credits, including:
- Child and Dependent Care Credit
- Premium Tax Credit
- Retirement Savings Contribution Credit
With over 30 million taxpayers eligible, the program is expected to see significant adoption.
IRS Free File: Another No-Cost Option
IRS Free File remains a popular choice for taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $84,000 or less. In partnership with private tax software companies, this program offers guided tax preparation tools at no cost. Taxpayers can prepare their returns now, and they’ll be filed electronically on January 27 when the IRS officially begins processing returns.
How the IRS is Addressing Taxpayer Concerns
The IRS has also been working to address longstanding issues like wait times and service delays. The last two filing seasons saw:
- 85% service levels on phone lines
- Wait times averaging under five minutes
- Increased assistance at Taxpayer Assistance Centers
These efforts are part of the agency’s broader modernization initiative, which relies on consistent investment in technology and infrastructure.
What Taxpayers Should Do Now
The IRS encourages taxpayers to take a few steps to prepare for the upcoming season:
- Organize Your Documents: Gather your W-2s, 1099s, and other financial records.
- Set Up an IRS Online Account: This tool provides quick access to your tax details and notifications.
- Beware of Scams: Stay alert for fraudulent emails or phone calls pretending to be from the IRS.
- Choose a Trusted Tax Preparer: Use the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers to find qualified professionals.
