What Changed Under the Social Security Fairness Act?
The law, signed in December 2024, eliminates two controversial rules that prevented workers with public pensions from collecting their full Social Security benefits. That means eligible retirees will get a lump-sum payment covering the months they were shortchanged. Most of these payments will be deposited by the end of March 2025.
Starting in April 2025, the new, higher monthly payments will kick in automatically, reflecting the full benefits retirees are owed.
