Are IRS Layoffs the Real Reason for Tax Refund Delays in 2025?

The IRS has plans to lay off thousands of employees, cutting deep into its workforce right in the middle of tax season and possibly delaying tax refunds in 2025.

Not content to stop there, the Department of Government Efficiency headed by Elon Musk initiated an audit of the IRS, as if things weren’t chaotic enough.

While both steps come under the president’s project of trimming government inefficiency, for taxpayers, there is another question: will the refunds be delayed?

Will This Delay Your Tax Refund?

Here is why your refund may take longer than expected:

  • Fewer IRS workers: Fewer employees mean longer processing times.
  • DOGE audit distractions: An active audit may slow down regular IRS functions.
  • Impact on the system: In the case of implementing mid-season efficiency measures on DOGE, disruption may happen.
  • Growing backlog: Delays will snowball if the IRS can’t keep pace. Thank you!

That said, the IRS has automated many processes, and e-filing with direct deposit remains the fastest way to get your refund.

What Taxpayers Should Do

Here’s how to avoid finding yourself in refund limbo:

  • File early: The earlier you file, the more likely you are to receive your refund on time.
  • E-file and use direct deposit: Paper returns take longer, so go digital.
  • Track your refund: You can check your status on the IRS’s “Where’s My Refund?” tool.
  • Be patient but proactive: when there are delays, expect long customer service wait times and call only when necessary.

The Bigger Picture

Privacy and Politics Beyond refunds, there are concerns that the DOGE audit will provide auditors with access to taxpayer information that could be used for political targeting. At this point, DOGE does not have access to individual tax filings, but lawmakers are continuing to monitor that situation.

Should you be worried? Maybe. It’s not the end of the world. The worst that might happen is you have to wait a few weeks longer. The smartest thing to do is to file early and use e-file with direct deposit.

It could be a bumpy tax season with fewer IRS workers and an active audit, but smart taxpayers should have few problems getting their refunds.

  1. It’s as simple as that… Just be patient… Most of us aren’t rich and depend on it…. You go day today with nothing to eat and no money…. Because we don’t deserve a raise but you guys do
