It’s that time of the year again, Daylight Saving Time (DST) kicks in this Sunday, March 9, 2025, at exactly 2:00 a.m.
That means clocks will spring forward by one hour, giving us more evening daylight but also stealing an hour of precious sleep.
What Happens at 2:00 A.M.?
At 2:00 a.m. local time, most of the U.S. will move their clocks ahead to 3:00 a.m. instantly. This shift marks the official start of DST, which will last until November 2, 2025. While the extra daylight in the evening is a welcome change for many, it also means darker mornings and the dreaded adjustment period for our sleep schedules.
Who Observes Daylight Saving Time?
Most states in the U.S. participate in DST, with a few exceptions. Hawaii and most of Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) do not observe DST, meaning their clocks stay the same year-round. Several U.S. territories, including Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, also skip the time change.
Why Do We Still Change the Clocks?
Originally introduced in 1918 as a wartime measure to conserve energy, DST has stuck around for over a century. The idea is that more daylight in the evening reduces electricity use and encourages outdoor activity. However, many experts argue that the practice is outdated, citing increased health risks, disrupted sleep patterns, and even higher rates of heart attacks and car accidents following the time change.
Could DST Be Permanent?
The debate over Daylight Saving Time never ends. In 2022, the Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act, aiming to make DST permanent, but the bill stalled in the House. President Donald Trump recently weighed in, saying the issue is “50-50” and not a priority, despite previously calling DST “inconvenient.” Elon Musk also polled Twitter users about the practice, with a slight majority favoring later sunsets over earlier mornings.
What to Do Before Sunday
- Set your clocks forward one hour before bed on Saturday night to avoid being late Sunday morning.
- Expect grogginess, it may take a few days to adjust.
- Plan your sleep, going to bed earlier can help minimize the effects of losing an hour.
Love it or hate it, Daylight Saving Time is here, so get ready to lose an hour of sleep but gain more sunshine!
