How to Know If You’re Eligible for the 2025 IRS Stimulus Check

Are You Eligible for the IRS Stimulus Check? Here’s How to Find Out

The IRS stimulus check 2025 is in the news, with about 1 million taxpayers scheduled to be mailed unclaimed rebate payments over the next several weeks.

These payments are related to the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit and cover up to $1,400 per household. Whether you’re unsure about your eligibility or wondering how the payments will be issued, here is what you need to know about the latest IRS initiative.

What is the IRS Stimulus Check?

The IRS stimulus check is part of the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, which was introduced under the American Rescue Plan Act; it allowed filers to claim up to $1,400 per filer and $1,400 per dependent during the pandemic. In this regard, the IRS identifies those that didn’t claim the full amount and issues the missing payments.

How to Check Your Eligibility

You may be eligible for the payment if:

  • You filed a 2021 tax return but didn’t complete the section for Recovery Rebate Credit.
  • You entered $0 in the Recovery Rebate Credit field when you were eligible for an amount.

Most taxpayers who already claimed the credit will not get any further payments, but those identified by the IRS will be reimbursed automatically.

How Much Will You Receive?

The amount of your payment will depend upon your situation, but the maximum is $1,400 per person. Examples :

  • A single filer could get up to $1,400.
  • A family of four-two adults and two children-could get as much as $5,600.

How Are Payments Sent?

The payments will be automatic upon:

  • Direct deposits will go into the bank account listed on your 2023 tax return.
  • Checks will be mailed to the address on file at the IRS.

Eligible taxpayers don’t need to take any action, and payments should arrive by the end of the month.

What If You Haven’t Received Your Payment?

If you think you may be eligible and do not get your payment by the end of the month:

  • Check your 2021 tax return for errors or omissions.
  • You can find additional information at the IRS’s FAQ page on the Recovery Rebate Credit.
  • To confirm your status, contact the IRS directly.

Why Now?

The IRS periodically reviews prior year tax returns to identify taxpayers who might be owed unpaid credits or refunds. The initiative ensures that qualified taxpayers who missed out on claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit get what they were eligible for.
