If you’ve stocked up on canned tuna recently, you might want to check your pantry—a nationwide recall has been issued for certain brands like Costco due to a botulism risk.
The affected tuna products were sold at major retailers like Trader Joe’s, Walmart, H-E-B, and Costco, and consumers are being urged to toss them out immediately after the issue of a recall.
What’s the Issue?
Tri-Union Seafoods, the company behind these tuna brands, discovered a manufacturing defect in the pull-tab lids that could cause the cans to leak or become contaminated over time. That’s a big problem—if Clostridium botulinum bacteria grow inside, it can lead to botulism poisoning, a rare but potentially fatal illness.
Which Brands Are Affected?
According to the FDA, the recall affects specific lots of:
- Trader Joe’s – Sold in multiple states across the U.S.
- Genova – Available at Costco and various supermarkets.
- Van Camp’s – Sold at Walmart and independent retailers.
- H-E-B – Distributed across Texas.
Symptoms of Botulism
While no illnesses have been reported yet, the CDC warns that botulism poisoning can cause:
- Difficulty breathing
- Muscle paralysis
- Blurred vision
- Slurred speech
- Nausea and vomiting
If you’ve eaten any of the recalled tuna and experience these symptoms, seek medical help immediately.
What You Should Do
If you have any of the recalled products:
- Do NOT consume them, even if they look or smell fine.
- Return them to the store for a full refund.
- Contact Tri-Union Seafoods at [email protected] or 833-374-0171 for a retrieval kit and replacement coupon.
Food recalls are never fun, but this one is serious. If you have any of the affected tuna, don’t take any chances—toss it or return it for a refund. Stay safe and double-check those cans before making your next tuna sandwich.
