While this sure isn’t the first Classic from the 1980’s Kygo has given his fresh new take on, the Norwegian producer and DJ just released his remix of Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney’s “Say Say Say” from 1983.
One of Kygo’s most famous remakes of a classic was when he gave Whitney Houston’s legendary “Higher Love” a classic Kygo twist and now he has similarly mixed “Say Say Say” breathing his signature soundscape into the classic by the two legends, Jackson and McCartney.
Describing how the incredible opportunity came around, Kygo revealed in an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 saying his team reached out to McCartney and the estate of the late Michael Jackson and eventually they sent the songs original stems for Kygo to work on.
He shared, “I guess what I usually do is take out most of the original production, and I start to put down some simple chords over the vocal, and I just play around with it from there. And then, I obviously want to keep some of the original production, so I try to take it in step by step.” Continuing to explain his process he said, “I feel like it’s easy to get locked in the same lane if you keep all the original production. So, I feel like it’s easier for me, if I want to have some freedom and experiment, it’s easier to take out the original production and just play around with it, and record whatever feels natural, and then bring back in some of the original elements that makes the song so great in the first place.”
He also went on to share his excitement about the release saying “I’m absolutely honored to work on a song that was made by two of the greatest musical legends of all time. Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson have meant so much to me as an artist and I’ve been listening to their music since I was a kid. It’s been a dream of mine to collaborate alongside these iconic artists and hope everyone enjoys the song as much as I do.”
