Matroda Drops New Single, ‘Hazy’

Matroda dips back into moody waters on his latest single, “Hazy,” a tantalizing house track clocking in as his seventh appearance on the Insomniac Records catalog.

Despite keeping a consistent presence in everyone’s release radar, trying to predict Matroda’s next move will always leave fans coming up short.

The Croatian-born, L.A-based producer has built a reputation for being a bit of a wild card, using his self-coined term #MatrodaSound as a license to go rogue sonically. For his next stint with Insomniac, Matroda kicks up a storm like there’s no tomorrow.

Making its title feel justified, “Hazy” rolls in like a thick fog. A chunky hollow kick and hissing hat combo provide the backdrop for the track’s main motif: oscillating organ chords that flicker beneath an entrancing, raspy vocal fry.

With desperation clouding the protagonist’s judgment, she starts to lose her grip on reality as the murky undertones precipitate into a full-blown hurricane. The juddering lead comes back into play, only now it’s caught inside a percolating progression of tumbling percussion, muted strums, panning vocal chops, and pitch-shifting basslines. Taking each of these shocking components into account, Matroda makes the daze seem everlasting.

Within this year alone, Matroda has already blown through a hefty number of house music influences. His last release saw him taking a match to the Latin vibe, teaming up with Wax Motif on their “La Candela Viva” tech house collab for Insomniac’s sister imprint, HARD Recs.

A couple of months prior, he joined forces with Indonesian sensation Bleu Clair on their shuffling tech thumper “PWR,” arriving before a short series of exclusive back-to-back sets, which debuted at EDC Las Vegas, and will be coming back around for another go at Exchange LA in November.

At the start of 2022, he splintered off into two directions with his piano-led groove “Gotta Let You Go” and the muscular club tool “Touchin’ Me” on the B-side. He is an artist who has dynamic for days. But his latest offering lands closest to one of his most successful singles to date, “Forget It,” the breakup anthem released back in 2020.

The track was a staunch departure from anything else dotting his discography at the time, leading it to rack up close to 17 million streams and counting.

“Hazy” feels like an homage to one of his career-defining records thus far; and yet, it still manages to stand entirely on its own two legs. This is one of the benefits of being a wildcard like Matroda.

Matroda’s new single “Hazy” is available on all platforms via Insomniac Records.
