Coming from separate but related backgrounds in punk and hardcore, it’s perhaps a bit surprising that Colin Guffey and Shane Parks would get together to create Metawav, their dance-music outfit based in Detroit, MI.
By combining those experiences with inspirations ranging from Timbaland to Charlotte de Witte, and molding it all into an up-tempo, tech-house reminiscent package, Metawav is creating music that is both unique and enticing.
“Shift” comes as the group’s second release, following their first track “Cntrl” which dropped in August of this year.
“We let this one create itself for sure,” says Colin, describing the process as a very natural collaboration. Colin will often write on his guitar and transpose the music to other instruments, with Shane bringing the techniques that he’s honed through his “Suga Shane” alias to build and flesh-out the tracks. Together, the duo created “Shift” to show their progression from their first track, and to let their fans know to always expect the unexpected.
Colin continues: “‘Shift’ is a push through to the higher expectations that we have for ourselves. With our second release we wanted to show our general progression, but one thing that listeners should know is that we have no intention of writing the same songs over and over.” Shane adds, “Exactly. When you listen to Metawav., we want it to be a journey.”
The video for “Shift” is loose, organic, and fun, which is exactly the vibe that the group was striving for. “There was very little direction given to the dancers in the video. The only thing we told them was to be themselves and have a great time.” If you’re looking for a solid dance track to keep the energy going through the Fall, look no further than “Shift,” the latest from Metawav.
