SLO (the project from Jess Mills) returns with a brand new 4 track EP, Atone. Out now, the EP is a breathtaking collection of new material that finds SLO progressing into hypnotically darker areas, while still showcasing her devastating and sophisticated songwriting – all delivered with her stirring vocal.
Written and produced with long-term collaborators Bearcubs, Henry Binns (Zero 7) and Brad Ellis (The Nextmen), the EP has been a year in the making. Well worth the wait, the collection is a masterclass in melding understated pop, R&B and spacious electronica with subtle elegance. Beautifully delicate layers are built on top of each other with ease, until headily texturized yet spacious crescendos are formed with immediately profound effect.
With the release of her first eponymous EP as SLO in 2015, the singer-songwriter rapidly racked up critical acclaim with The FADER, i-D, The Line Of Best Fit, EARMILK, Complex, CLASH, Idolator and many more. The year since was spent writing songs for the likes of Gorgon City, Joe Goddard and TALA, and also saw Mills become an integral and influential member of leading refugee crisis charity Help Refugees.
The charity, founded by Radio X presenter Lliana Bird, writer and TV presenter Dawn OPorter, activist and comedian Heydon Prowse (BBCs The Revolution Will Not Be Televised) and friend Josie Naughton, work to raise funds and collect goods in response to the current refugee crisis. The charity have built over 1500 shelters at the time of writing and sent over 40 arctic lorries full of aid across Europe, and have consequently been covered in The Times, VICE, The Telegraph, The Independent, Huffington Post, Evening Standard, Glamour Magazine, NME, CLASH and more, as well as winning The Guardians Volunteer Organisation of The Month in October 2015 and appearing across BBC News, Good Morning Britain, BBC Breakfast, LBC and Channel 5 News.
Alongside previous singles from the EP, Atone ft. Bearcubs and Blind, the Atone EP includes two gorgeous new tracks, Birds In The Cage and Said And Done. About the EP, SLO says The Atone EP was written between London and LA last year. More than ever music has become and sanctuary for me- a place to block out the noise and be present. This EP is reaches back to the archives of unhappier times, but it also makes peace with a lot of the past too. Letting go doesnt come easily to me – so this in itself feels like progress.
