Following the release of his collaborative future bass single “High” with Jo Cohen last month, Israeli bass producer Whales returned to Monstercat today with his new melodic dubstep single, “Locked Away.”
Fueled by his time spent in lockdown, Whales takes his classic sound to a new level with the addition of alternative rock elements. Courtney Drummey’s eloquent vocals paired with moody guitar chords paint a somber picture of someone trapped in a loveless relationship.
“Locked Away” is exemplary of Whales’ lauded sound design as a leading producer in the space, as the aggressive bass stabs and thumping kicks blend perfectly with the colourful chord stacks and bright synth lead.
Whales shares, “I was trying to blend some alternative rock vibes with EDM. This was one of the many experiments I did during the pandemic to mix a bunch of things I like together.”
After emerging in the bass music scene in 2017, Whales has steadily become a household name thanks to his unique productions and high-octane live sets. After making his Monstercat debut in May of this year, the Israeli producer has gone on to perform at Insomniac’s new melodic bass festival Lost In Dreams, as well as make his debut at Excision’s renowned dubstep festival Lost Lands. Fans can look forward to experiencing Whales’ epic performances at his upcoming show on October 14 at Trinity Nightclub in Seattle as he continues his North America tour.
