Florida Artist Sues Taylor Swift for $7 Million Over Copyright Claims

In a shocking legal battle, pop superstar Taylor Swift faces a $7 million lawsuit from a Florida artist who claims her music and videos infringe on original work.

The lawsuit, filed by Kimberly Marasco, alleges that Swift’s songs contain lyrics and themes taken directly from her poetry and writings.

The Lawsuit: A Small Claim Turns Into a $7 Million Battle

Kimberly Marasco initially filed a lawsuit in April 2024, demanding only $100 in damages. However, after reviewing her case, she escalated her claims, seeking over $7 million for what she calls “unauthorized use of creative elements” in Taylor Swift’s work.

The case was moved to the Southern District of Florida, where it is now being handled by Judge Aileen Cannon, a well-known Trump appointee. In October 2024, Marasco expanded her allegations, stating that Swift’s albums Lover, Folklore, Midnights, and The Tortured Poets Department all contained direct references to her poetry, including her works “Fallen from Grace” and “Dealing with Chronic Illness: Vestibular Neuritis.”

What Songs Are Being Targeted?

Marasco has identified over a dozen tracks from Swift’s recent albums, claiming they incorporate her original ideas. While specific songs have not been publicly disclosed, her complaint highlights themes and lyrical similarities that she insists prove plagiarism.

Legal Twist: Taylor Swift Dropped—For Now

Judge Cannon temporarily dismissed Swift from the lawsuit after Marasco failed to serve the case on time in December 2024. However, the lawsuit remains active against Taylor Swift Productions, meaning her legal team must still respond to the claims.

The ruling does not permanently absolve Swift. Marasco has been given the opportunity to refile her lawsuit against Swift personally, meaning this battle is far from over.

Swift’s Legal Team Fights Back

Swift’s attorneys, Aaron S. Blynn and Katherine Wright Morrone, have strongly denied the allegations. They have filed a motion to dismiss, arguing that 50% of Marasco’s claims are time-barred, meaning they fall outside the legal timeframe for copyright disputes.

They also argue that the lawsuit lacks evidence and is a baseless attempt to capitalize on Swift’s massive success. Despite this, Marasco has signaled her intent to appeal the decision or refile her claims.

What’s Next for Taylor Swift?

This lawsuit comes at the peak of Swift’s career. Her Eras Tour, which concluded in December 2024, became the highest-grossing tour in history, surpassing $2 billion in ticket sales.

While Swift has faced legal challenges before, this case could be different if Marasco successfully refiles. For now, Swift’s production company remains in the legal crosshairs, and music fans are watching closely.

The case between Kimberly Marasco and Taylor Swift is far from settled. With a potential refile looming, Swift’s legal team remains on high alert. Will Marasco prove her claims, or will Swift’s defense crush the lawsuit? Stay tuned.
