Amazon launches its very own music streaming service

Spotify and Apple Music have some new competition in the form of Amazon’s very own ‘Amazon Music Unlimited’ platform.

Now you’re probably wondering, “Hey, doesn’t Amazon Prime already do that?” Well, the answer is both yes and no. Amazon Prime already offers free music for its members, but that library maxes out at about two million songs, while the new offering reaches well into the tens of millions. And since the main differences between streaming services are exclusive deals and the user interface, Amazon has a key differentiator that they think will sway potential users: Alexa voice control. Using any Alexa enabled device, users can simply speak to the service and ask to hear the “new” song by an artist, or a playlist of 90s alternative.

Amazon’s Vice President of Digital Music, Steve Boom says “Think of this as two different levels: Prime is now the introductory service and Unlimited is the full service”

Perhaps the service’s biggest feature is price. If you’re already an Amazon Prime customer, Amazon Music Unlimited is available for just $7.99 per month or $79 per year, undercutting the norm of $9.99 per month charged by most other services. If you’re not a Prime customer however, you’ll still be charged the customary $9.99 per month. If you happen to own an Amazon Echo, Echo Dot or Amazon Tap device, the price is even lower at $3.99 per month, but music playback only works on that device.

So, do you think Amazon’s latest product has a chance against the likes of Spotify and Apple Music? Just like Apple, Amazon has an enormous number of credit cards on file (estimated at 300 million), but that doesn’t mean that a large percentage of them will automatically subscribe to a new offering, as we saw with Apple Music. Well, to be honest I don’t think it will really affect Spotify or Apple Music’s position in terms of market leadership just yet but Amazon Music Unlimited is sure to make a scratch if not a dent to it’s competitor’s market share.
