Banking Crisis? TD Bank Joins Wave of Closures Hitting U.S. Towns

If you’re banking with TD Bank, you might want to double-check your nearest branch after news of closures.

A total of 38 TD Bank locations across 10 states and Washington, DC, are officially shutting down on June 5, and the news has customers in a panic.

While TD insists these closures are part of standard operational evaluations, the impact on communities is anything but business-as-usual. A bank representative told The US Sun that these changes are the result of looking at “store traffic, customer needs, product use, and community landscape.” They say it’s about streamlining, but with so many closures hitting at once, people are scrambling to figure out how to manage their money.

The affected states include Connecticut, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington, DC. Some cities, especially in places like New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, are losing multiple branches in one shot.

The official closure date of June 5 was confirmed by Penn Live, which means TD customers have only a few weeks left to make new plans. TD has said customers can still access their accounts through their 1,000+ remaining locations or go digital. But that doesn’t help much if you’re a business owner who makes regular cash deposits or someone in a rural area with limited internet access.

To make things even worse, this wave of closures comes while TD is still tangled up in a massive $3 billion money laundering settlement with the Department of Justice. So yeah, this isn’t exactly a great moment for the bank’s public image.

And it’s not just TD. The entire banking sector seems to be shrinking its physical presence. From April 1 to April 26 this year alone, 14 banks shut down branches. Flagstar led the charge with 16 closures, followed by Bank of America with 9. Even big names like Chase, U.S. Bank, PNC, Fifth Third, and Wells Fargo are shutting doors.

In fact, according to federal data, 272 branches closed in just the first quarter of 2025, with TD alone closing 37-not even counting the 38 more set for June. And in 2024, over 1,000 branches vanished across the U.S.

What’s fueling all this? It’s a mix of things. More people are banking online, sure. But it’s also about cutting costs, consolidating services, and keeping up with the shift to digital finance. Still, that doesn’t make it easier for everyday folks who depend on brick-and-mortar banks.

According to Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate, this wave of closures hits rural communities the hardest. “Consumers and small businesses in rural areas are the most impacted,” he told DailyMail.com. Especially small business owners who need to make daily cash deposits or those without access to reliable transportation-this change isn’t just an inconvenience. It’s a financial headache.

Here are some of the cities saying goodbye to their TD Bank branches:

  • In Connecticut, branches in North Branford and Torrington are closing.
  • Florida will lose branches in Daytona Beach, Lake City, and Miami Beach.
  • Maine is losing five locations, including Fairfield and Fort Kent.
  • Massachusetts is hit hard with closures in places like Bradford, Framingham, and Methuen. New Hampshire, New Jersey, and New York all have multiple branches closing, including key urban centers like NYC and Philadelphia. Even South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington, DC, aren’t spared.

If you’re a TD customer, now’s the time to move. The clock’s ticking fast toward June 5. Whether you’re switching banks or diving deeper into digital banking, the days of casually walking into your local TD branch may be numbered.
