Its not the fastest sell-out in event history but it sure is impressive. 30,000 tickets gone in just 30 minutes!

Burning Man’s main sale allotment of 30,000 tickets were all sold out in a span of 30 minutes yesterday. Individual tickets went for $390 apiece, while 10,000 vehicle passes were purchased for $80.

The organisers used a lottery system to make the purchasing of tickets more fair for those who want to attend the festival this year. Attendees had to pre-register on Burning Man’s site before hand. Once registered, accounts were assigned a random spot in the queue, helping to mitigate factors like Internet speed and login times. This did not affect prospective buyers’ chances of winning a ticket so long as they logged on within 20 minutes of the tickets going on sale. Those who joined after the initial 20 minute window were added at the back of the line. Users were limited to two tickets and one vehicle pass per registered account. Goes without saying that quite a number of fans missed out on tickets.

Tickets are still available for sale on secondary markets though but also through the Burning Man’s own Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) which allows attendees to buy and sell tickets securely through Burning Man while avoiding scalpers and scammers.

Burning Man will be held in Black Rock City in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada during the final days of August. This year’s theme is DaVinci’s Workshop and the Italian Renaissance.
