In a major setback for Tesla, U.S. safety regulators have ordered the recall of virtually all Cybertrucks currently on the road. The recall, announced on March 21, 2025, by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affects 46,096 Cybertrucks, covering every 2024 and 2025 model delivered since the vehicle’s debut in November 2023.
The recall stems from a dangerous defect in the cant rail assembly, a stainless steel panel strip running alongside the windshield and roof. According to the NHTSA, these panels can detach while driving, posing serious road hazards and increasing the risk of collisions. Viral social media videos recently showed individuals easily pulling the panels off Cybertrucks by hand, further amplifying public concern.
Tesla reported that the issue arises from the structural adhesive used to affix the panel, which may not withstand environmental stressors. The company has since updated the adhesive compound and reinforcement methods to address the problem.
Tesla will replace the faulty cant rail panels free of charge. The company will begin notifying affected customers via mail starting May 19, 2025. In the meantime, Cybertruck owners are urged to avoid high-speed travel and contact Tesla customer support at 1-877-798-3752, or visit nhtsa.gov for updates.
This is the eighth recall for the futuristic pickup in just over a year. Previous recalls include:
- Nov 2023: Electric inverter failure, causing sudden power loss.
- Apr 2024: Acceleration pedal prone to sticking.
- Issues with windshield wipers, display screen malfunctions, and improper lighting have also triggered recalls.
Despite these concerns, Tesla had continued deliveries until this latest issue prompted regulatory intervention.
Tesla shares have plummeted 42% in 2025, reflecting eroding investor confidence. The company is also facing heightened scrutiny following incidents of arson and vandalism at Tesla dealerships and charging stations. Some of these attacks were reportedly politically motivated, coinciding with Elon Musk’s growing ties to government operations under President Donald Trump’s administration.
Meanwhile, competition from Chinese EV makers is eroding Tesla’s market share globally, compounding the impact of mounting recall-related costs and negative publicity.
What Owners Need to Know
Affected Cybertruck owners should:
- Wait for Tesla’s official notice (mailing begins May 19, 2025).
- Contact Tesla at 1-877-798-3752 or visit nhtsa.gov for instructions.
- Avoid high-speed driving until repairs are completed.
While no injuries have been officially reported due to the panel defect, regulators and consumer watchdogs warn that the issue could lead to catastrophic incidents if not addressed swiftly.
The Cybertruck, once hailed as the next frontier in EV innovation, is now grappling with serious questions about safety and quality control. As Tesla races to fix the issue and rebuild public trust, the auto industry will be watching closely to see whether the brand can bounce back from yet another high-profile recall.
