Deadly Nightclub Fire in North Macedonia Kills 59 – Here’s What Happened

A horrific fire in a nightclub within Kocani, North Macedonia, has killed at least 59 people and injured over 155 others, turning what was supposed to be a night of music and celebration into one of the country’s worst tragedies.

How the Fire Started

The fire had begun at about 2:30 AM local time at the Pulse Club, where 1,500 people showed up to see a concert by DNK, a very well-known hip-hop duo in the country.

Preliminary reports suggest that sparks from pyrotechnic devices set fire to the ceiling, which was made of highly inflammable material. In seconds, the flames spread so fast, trapping many inside.

Panic, Chaos, and Desperate Escapes

The footage inside the nightclub in Macedonia showed concertgoers trying to put out the fire while others were hesitant to leave, thinking that it would not take over the premises so fast.

Survivor Marija Taseva, 20, recounted how she was caught in a stampede as people rushed toward the exits. She was trampled but managed to escape. Her 25-year-old sister remains missing, however, and the family fears she may have been transferred to Skopje for treatment.

Arrests and Government Response

The authorities have so far made one arrest and issued four more warrants. Among the detained ones, there is also the owner of the club. The officials also announced a seven-day national mourning period and ordered immediate inspections of all nightclubs and big venues.

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski called it a “difficult and very sad day” and promised to determine who is responsible and that this will never happen again.

A Nation in Mourning

With at least 18 still in critical condition, the number of those who have died is likely to increase. Many of the victims fell within the age bracket of 14-24 years, thus making this a very great loss.

Families continue to look for their missing ones, while hospitals are struggling to identify the injured due to a lack of identification cards. This tragedy has sent North Macedonia into shock, raising very serious concerns about safety within nightclubs and fire prevention.

While an in-depth investigation is under way, the country is in mourning for the loss of young lives on a night that was supposed to be remembered, for all the right reasons.
